As they have several children born abroad, then surely they could be abroad in 1851?

1881 Tranmere cheshire D2 >35
Thomas Burke 1853 railway clerk born Walmer kent
Martha 1854 Davenport
Thomas son 1877 scotland
Patrick Burke 18 born 1863 Manchester (same as on 1871 census above)
So it looks like the same family!

Have you looked for any earlier births of possible children....and maybe deaths?

8 years after marriage seems quite a long time before the birth of Thomas b. Walmer, so can you be sure they are the same couples?

All the places named could have military connections though...................

You could search FindMyPast to see if there are any discharge papers for him in Ref WO97. If his papers have survived, they would tell you when he was discharged although probably won't mention his family, but may tell you where he was going to live.

Are you sure he didn't marry Maria Timmuchi? From Isle of Wight BMDs:

Year Groom Surname Forename(s) Bride Surname Forename(s) Place Register

But Tinnuchi on FreeBMD:

I would welcome any advice as to whether U think I am correct in my thinking. In 1849 0n the Isle of Wight Thomas Burke born c1829 Ireland marrried Mary Louisa Frances Tennes born 1st July 1833 Edinburgh. Thomas was in the Army and was based at Parkhurst Barracks on the IOW.
Now the conumdrem starts. There is no census record that I can find on the 1851 be it in England or Scotland.

A Thomas and Mary Burke are to be found on the 1861 UK census at Aldershot Hampshire with 2 sons. Thomas b 1857 Walmer Kent and William b1860 West Indies. Thomas was still in the Army.

In 1871 a Thomas Burke and Mary are found in Scotland with the same children but he is now a Railway Porter with a pension. Would this be an army pension. The only thing different is that Mary is named as Mary A Burke.

In the 1881 Scottish census again Mary is listed as Mary Ann again as she is in the 1891 census.

Am I clutching at straws? The same children born in India appear on the census'. I don't have access to the Scotish census as they are not on Ancestry.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Many Thanks
