Philip Report 24 Jan 2013 23:26

Hi All, John Cox, age 22 is recorded as a Contractor's Engine Driver (Bachelor) and Lucy is a Laundress (Spinster).

Under the column headed If a regular marriage, signature of officiating minister and witnesses ... Against John Cox (father's name) there is a signature of (I can't read the first name) Macpherson and against Thomas Mooney's name there are two signatures, the first one looks like John Donald, witness and the other is Thomasina Mooney, witness.

As I say I have quite a lot of information on Lucy and her children and a little on her parents. Thomas was an army pensioner who died in tragic circumstances. He married Lucy Elliott in Dublin and Lucy junior was born there before they returned to Scotland where he left the army and went to work for Glasgow Council in whose service he died. Is there any other information I may have that could be useful.

So this may be her. Same one posted by Stuart, I think.

There is a 35 year old Lucy Cox on the 1911 Scottish census living in Fife.

MarieCeleste Report 24 Jan 2013 23:17

There is a private tree on Ancestry (the Killen tree so possibly Philip's, or connected) that has Lucy Elliott Mooney as born 1876, Scotland.

????????

"certificates I have for further children Lucy had she states that she is the widow of John Cox who died in 1911",

What census, where. What age is she, what age were they when they married, what were their occupations. All these questions if answered may help us to help you find who you are looking for.
How many other children were born after John Cox died in 1911???

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 24 Jan 2013 23:10

Unless you give the info we are asking for, you can't expect us to try to help

We aren't asking exactly difficult questions!

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 24 Jan 2013 23:10

What was John's stated occupation on the day he married?

How OLD was he?

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 24 Jan 2013 23:09

Philip - as asked, please give us the ages of the bride and groom. This is how we work.

You may well have a lot of info about Lucy but we need to build up a picture to work back from.

You have Lucy on the 1911 but we don't. Can you copy and paste that on here for us? We have no other way of seeing that without paying ourselves on Scotland's People (which we can't be expected to do).

Philip

Philip Report 24 Jan 2013 23:08

Alviegal, I have got Lucy on the 1911 census stating that she is 'head' of the household. On other birth certificates I have for further children Lucy had she states that she is the widow of John Cox who died in 1911, again I can't find any record of his death.

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 24 Jan 2013 23:07

Deceased people can't attend their son's wedding..............

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 24 Jan 2013 23:03

Philip, they couldn't have been present if they were dead.

If you tell us more about the bride and groom then it will help us to help you.

greyghost

greyghost Report 24 Jan 2013 22:59

What are the details of the bride and groom?

I realise that John and Lucy are them and I was suggesting a possible pair of names, without the benefit of the certificate which you have which will detail their ages and occupations. What name is given for the living parent?

EDIT - when you say present at the wedding - do you perhaps mean that name and occupation of the fathers is listed but that then after each father's name "deceased" is written. This doesn't mean they were at the wedding?

alviegal

alviegal Report 24 Jan 2013 22:56

Could you tell us the ages of John and Lucy please and their professions? Also what are the names of her parents?

Philip

Philip Report 24 Jan 2013 22:55

Stuart thanks for this but John and Lucy were the bride and groom on this certificate. I have lots of detail on Lucy so thought I would have a look down John's line but have been unable to find a birth certificate for him so thought I would try and find a marriage certificate for his parents John and Eliza but am drawing a blank everywhere I try.

Philip

Philip Report 24 Jan 2013 22:51

Thanks to all for coming back to me but it does clearly state on the statutory marriages form 644/03/0489 that I have printed off, under name, rank and profession of father that John Cox who was an Inn-keeper and Eliza Cox nee Newberry are deceased. It also says the same against the bride's father's name. Of the 4 people named under that heading the only one that is not recorded as deceased is the bride's mother.

The couple were married in the District of Dennistown (at least that's what it looks like) in the County of Lanark, their home address was 39 New Street, Glasgow.

Could these 2 be possibles. Maryhill/Barony is a district of Glasgow. If this John Cox is the groom and a soldier, it may explain why they can't be found in 1901??

You're right Reggie. I didn't even notice that! :-S :-S :-S :-S

Perhaps he means they are now deceased??

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 24 Jan 2013 22:37

I'm puzzled by the wording of the info about the parents............obviously they're deceased by now..........but if they were 'deceased' on the marriage cert, they couldn't have been 'present' .

Could you clarify. please, Philip

alviegal Report 24 Jan 2013 22:34

The only marriage for John Cox and Eliza Newberry is in Lanark in 1931 which is way too late for you.
