Jane....There is plenty of info.relating to the murder and also someone who was writing a book about Wm Mitchell..
Tudor's Toughs by Ernest McCall "alludes to the execution of a mysterious Black and Tan or Auxilliary. This must refer to William Mitchell hanged in Mountjoy on 7-6-1921. William Mitchell & Arthur Hardie, (both Tans) who were based at Dunlavin RIC Barracks, set out to rob a local JP (Robt Dixon) and, in the course of the bungled robbery, Hardie shot the JP and his son. Robert Dixon died. The next day, Hardie committed suicide, leaving Mitchell, to be tried by court-martial and hanged".
There is a an indication that on the morning of the execution Mitchells wife and small baby were outside the prison.
Given that he served in WW1 there may be a note of his parents in the WW1 Docs.
The person who was writing a book stated they had lots of info.. Perhaps it was your family member..????

Thanks Catherine,
You have been great with all your information you found on William Mitchell. I don't know why I would want him to be part of the family but if he is I can't really do anything about it. So he was hanged for his crime of murder I'm unable to find any info about his mother/father. So I may have to leave it as unsolved family history of the pass. Many thanks Regards.....Jane

I googled William's name and I'm wondering if this could be him:-
https://sites.google.com/site/northernirelandexecutions/ireland-executioners-continued
Talking about Executioner John Ellis.
On 25th of April 1921 he hanged Thomas Traynor in Dublin. Two months later on 7th June he was back at Mountjoy to perform the triple execution of Edmund Foly, Patrick Maher and William Mitchell. .................................................................................
I also found this:-
07/06/1921 On Tuesday the 7th of June 1921 Constable William Mitchell was hanged in Mountjoy for his part in the wilful murder of Mr. Robert Dixon JP in his house at Dunlavin County Wicklow. Mitchell had gone with another RIC Constable Arthur Hardie to Dixon’s house with the intention of robbery, the robbery went wrong and Hardie shot Dixon and his son, Dixon died form wounds receive.
..........but neither mention anything about their families, so no help unfortunately.

Catherine, Many thanks for the information. Yes, you have the right person,I'm trying to place him in our family tree. Old family stories from my late father talked about him but never said who he was in the family. you may have the right family because I think his father Joseph married woman with surname Moore but I don't think it was Annie. Regards....Jane
