Hi Mary
Thanks for the information. Much appreciated.
This may be a connection as the dob is around the same time and much of the detail is very much the same.
Framlingham is also the same area. Wher e di you locate these details please?
Emma married Osborn Roper as per below. This would mean she was married very young at 17/18. However this is not unusual at this time.
Emma Barnes England Marriages, 1538–1973 Name: Osborn Roper Spouse's Name: Emma Barnes Event Date: 27 Oct 1829 Event Place: Redlingfield, Suffolk, England
Our details show that John Barnes was married to Mary Green but again all has to be confirmed.
Do you have any further information on the family at all please?
Cheers David

Can anybody please assist with details of Emma Roper nee Barnes?
She was born around 1811 but I cannot locate her birth at all.
Married Osborn Roper in 1829. I can locate her on the various census's but a birth and parents are proving difficult.
Cheers David :-)

Having confirmation it is almost certain that Hezekiah Middleton is the father of Herbert Roper. However as indicated previously mother Emma Roper is confirmed on the birth registry with no father named and choose to retain the Roper name not Middleton. We now research the Middleton name as the likely bloodline as Osborn Roper, Emma's deceased husband died many years prior to Herbert being born. Hezekiah a widower lived with Emma until their deaths in 81 when Emma passed away.
Excellent to locate Chris Roper and welcome him to the extended family.

I have been researching exactly the same relative for the last year.I am the great grandson of Herbert.I am guessing that your wife is the child of Ernest and Lena.
I found the link between the middletons and Ropers is through the Barnes family.I have to check to confirm but I think Hezekiahs parents lived with Emma's family in their later years.
I would love to share our research on the Ropers.

Further research has unearthed that Emma Roper is the mother of Herbert Buckenham Roper. Born 26/9/1859. I now have a copy of the Entry of Birth. No indication of who is the father. Interesting that nothing is indicated but leads to the fact that Herbert was illegitimate we have hinted previously.
Emma Roper nee Barnes was a widow at this time from what we know. Hezekiah was living with Emma in the 1861 Census.
What we now know for sure is that we do not require ROPER research as this is not the blood line.
Comments appreciated. David

If you purchase the birth certificate through the GRO online for £9.25 it will hopefully tell you, at least, who his mother is. That way half of your problem is solved and it will help us to trace him.
Births Sep 1859 (>99%)
Roper Herbert Buch_nham Plomesgate 4a 591 Roper Herbert Buckenham Plomesgate 4a 596
I think the correct number is 596 although it is very difficult to read.
Hopefully it will prove to be the correct one.

Herbert Roper 1862
I have hit a brick wall with Herbert Roper 1862 - Cretingham, Suffolk. This information has been found in the 1881 and 1871 Census where he was living as a lodger.
Birth Year Birthplace Cretingham, Suffolk, England Age 19 Occupation Clock Maker Marital Status U Head of Household Amelia STANFORD Relation Lodger
We cannot find any information re his parents and thus come to a full stop despite much assistance from many members. However we do feel that his father may be Hezekiah Middleton brother of Dorcas Stamford and an illegitimate son of a Roper in Cretingham.
My wife Beverley is the Great Grand Daughter of Herbert and very keen to trace the Roper family back further.
Any assistance or information is very much appreciated.
Many thanks to all who have assisted so far over the past 6 months.
Cheers David

Hi again.
The only thing I can find is that Dorcas Middleton married William Stanford in 1841. She is sister to one of the Hezekiah's.
William was a blacksmith.

Dear All
Still no more clues although I still believe that Hezekiah Middleton has a link between the Stanfords and the Ropers. All very much supposition. However with births out of wedlock common but not registered the link may well have some truth in it.

Thanks Chris.
Family Search
Middletons in 1824 had a mass Baptism for approx 5 children.
Still believe there is this strong link between Ropers and Middletons/Stanfords but Hezekiah and Herbert have got lost in the process.

Hi Astra
Yes all still up in the air.
Interesting re the Hezekiah Middleton which I have also now found with Emma Roper as you did.
Also interesting is that Dorcas Stamford is nee Middleton.
I believe somewhere there is a link between the Stanfords, Ropers and Middletons with Hezekiah and Herbert.
1 Herbert Roper lived with the Stanfords 71 and 81. 2 Hezekiah was a Middleton and worked for Emma Roper, 71 Shopman. 3 Dorcas Stanford nee Middleton could be related to Hezekiah who may have fathered Herbert out of wedlock with a Roper and the Stanfords act as foster parents. 4 Herbert Roper names Hezekiah Roper (Grocer/Shopman) as father on his wedding banns. Herbert given mothers name Roper not Middleton.
Sounds far fetched but in that day and age possible.
A jigsaw puzzle with a few missing pieces. A bit like Upstairs/Downstairs.
However I could be way off the mark. The Ropers are full of intrigue as I have told my wife.
