Mary Report 3 Jan 2013 16:42

MC: actually I don't know if she was married before or after she came to the US. I think perhaps at the time I couldn't find any infor under the name "Christy" and when I went to the NYC archives I was able to see the origianl marriage cert for her and James Barnshaw and was surprised to see a previous marriage listed for her. She was only about 17 when she arrived here, but I have another g aunt who was married at 14 in Scotland so I couldn't rule out the possiblity. I couldn't find info in the archives for a previous marriage. In retrospect, it may be that the first marriage was outside the 5 boros.

Sorry about that, of course the aunt is on line 003, not 006.
At least it was the correct page, but that's made a lot of work for nothing. :-(

Have searched through yet again and think I may have found the appropriate"Aunt"

Bridget Rodgers aged 40 yrs seamstresss m. b Co Tyrone living PA final destination Philly

On Ellis Island data base she is on same page as Mgt.Story...2nd line down and above notation...travelling with niece...!!! Cant make out exact address she is going to but looks like Nth 2nd St. Philidelphia

That may eventually make more sense...I live in hope....!!!

Mary I've searched all of the passenger lists on Ancestry worldwide including all US, but haven't tried Canada ....

Could you remind me why you think Margaret b 1864 first marriage was before 1882 (as mentioned in your very first post) ? How do you know she didn't marry in America.? In fact, although she said she's been married before when she wed Mr Barnshaw, how do we know that's true?

Regarding the names you don't recognise - we were only trying to establish if this mysterious aunt that young Margaret travelled with in 1908 was somehow a connection to her mother's first husband (but it appears she wasn't).

Mary

Mary Report 3 Jan 2013 15:12

Not recognizing any of these latest names, location..... this may be a red herring.
I think I may need to go back and start searching for Margaret Christy's b 1864 entry into the USA. Since her year of entry is pre-Eliis Island.... and could possibly have been thru Canada because of immigration quotas... what is the best website to go to?

PS: You all have been very generous with your research time...

Yes I see where your coming from MC, my parents cousins as kids we called the aunts & uncles. But Margaret Elder was only 10 years older than Margaret Bernard. Plus there from 2 different Counties

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 3 Jan 2013 14:21

I'm thinking she may have been an aunt of the close family friend type!

When I was a bairn my parent's closes friends were known to me as Aunty this and Uncle that.

I found his 1911 naturalisation papers Maura - Alexander and Margaret divorced on 19 October 1910 and her whereabouts were unknown. It does say she'd been born in Ireland. I think he later married a Sarah Ann.

The 1910 said he's been married 8 years but I can't find their marriage to see what her maiden name was.

They did have a child Josephine born 17 November 1904 in Pittsburgh.

According to the 1910 census, there a Alexander Storey living at 604 South Avenue Wilkinsburg, he married but there no wife with him

I think it's the woman below her that's from Cavan, the image I'm looking at on ancestry seems to show her as Derry. Strangely, the Ancestry version doesn't mention anything about her travelling with a niece and has her arriving 30 December .....

(just popping over to Ellis Island to look at that one)

On the outgoing manifest from Derry dated 20 December the page that Margaret Storey is listed on has "Americans" written on it at the top. On the arrival manifest it was originally dated 29 December but changed to the 30th - perhaps arrived just after midnight? (Wonder what they did on Christmas day?)

Eringobragh1916

Eringobragh1916 Report 3 Jan 2013 11:52

You and me both...!!

The only thing I have seen on the manifest was that she was a Cavan woman..!!
Lot of help that is...
