Maura, you are probably correct. Confusion was whether he was a cousin or a brother, dob varies by 10 years on the us census for this individual. and his date of death doesn't line up with Irish information. What database gave you Katherines m.s.?

Mary its a waste of time starting a thread on Patrick when some of his information is already on this thread. He was born 1867 to Thomas Christie and Margaret Hamil, if that him in the census he married Katherine McCusker 1893 Phil, and according to the census he emigrated 1887.

Hope Maura manages to cast her eye over the thread...

to Maura, MC and EGB:
your research is great! I've been able to better track the family. The Margaret Christy Barnard Barnshaw mystery is unravelling.and I'm still referring to your research.
her first husband I located in a NYC directory listed as "Alfred Barnard, Coachman" with an address that is only a block or 2 away from her 2nd husband James Barnshaw, chauffeur. I still have to plot out trips back and forth to Ireland to try and discover the reasons for her trips at those times. Still can't find out what became of husband #1 or what became of her daughter Margaret Barnard b 1891 after her trip here to the US in 1908.
I'm posting a new thread for Patrick Christy... I think may have been the elder margaret's brother.....

Yes all the children belong to Christy/Hamil, I wouldn't worry to much about her age being 60, it all depend on who the informant was, he/she my not of known her real age and just guess. My grt.grandmother registered her father death giving his age as 54 which would of made him 14 when she was born.

Mary Report 6 Jan 2013 16:47

john b1858
his mother b 1845? she was 13 yr old? when she died in 1908 I think the death cert said she was 60 so birth year would have been 1848, something wrong here...was she a second wife? were all those children parented by Hamill/Christy?

Margaret Barnett & Margaret Barnard are the same person, the head of the household her granny states she couldn't read, but if you look at the original image she signs her name with a mark, so she could write either. It was a R.I.C. man that fill out the census, so he wasn't a Tyrone man and probably didn't understand there brogue.

Mary

Mary Report 6 Jan 2013 14:07

we are most likely looking at transcription errors. On the Irish census "mcaleavey" is spelled wrong so perhaps Margaret Barnett on the same census is really Margaret Barnard.

Mary Report 6 Jan 2013 04:49

I wouldn't doubt that Oliver and Jaems Barnshaw crossed paths.
Margaret b 1892 at the beginning of the year and her mother remarrying at the end of the same year. She could have left her child with her mother's family till she could afford to bring her to the states. That is what happened with my family. My grandmother returned to Tyrone with 5 children in 1908 and stayed there at least a year while my grandfather came to the states and tried to find work in Pittsburgh. When that didn't work out, he went back to Ireland and then moved the family back to Scotland.

Might Oliver have worked for James and then Margaret married his conveniently widowed boss?

The odd thing is that on the 1900 census Margaret Barnshaw says she is the mother of 2 children. The 2 youngest on that census, James and Mabel, certainly seem to be hers and they appear with her on later census.

So where does Margaret b1892 fit in?

Mary Report 5 Jan 2013 19:17

EGB and Maura: food for thought as I run out the door...

occupations: Oliver Barnard: Coachman and James Barnshaw: chauffeur. I believe Barnshaw was an independent and had his own company.
This info coupled with the elderly rambling of my Aunt Tess (Theresa McAleavey Blauert) who we thought was talking about her own mother -- strange story about how she was "courting" 2 gentleman with the same/similar names.. (her version the name was Hamill, but she was a little confused at the time). The story being that Margaret wouldn't marry until she had seen the gentleman's bank books (plural!). So maybe this referred to James Barnshaw.

Yes ...well ....you couldnt make it up could you !!! Unbelievable...

Will run with Oliver and see where it takes me...although I would be thinking the Tanaghmore one is more likely but with this family...(if its the right one who knows.)
