Sorry about that, of course the aunt is on line 003, not 006.
At least it was the correct page, but that's made a lot of work for nothing. :-(

MC: actually I don't know if she was married before or after she came to the US. I think perhaps at the time I couldn't find any infor under the name "Christy" and when I went to the NYC archives I was able to see the origianl marriage cert for her and James Barnshaw and was surprised to see a previous marriage listed for her. She was only about 17 when she arrived here, but I have another g aunt who was married at 14 in Scotland so I couldn't rule out the possiblity. I couldn't find info in the archives for a previous marriage. In retrospect, it may be that the first marriage was outside the 5 boros.

Catherine...This is one big adventure...look on the positive side..if ever anyone wants to know about Margaret Storey...well...what can one say..the info is already found. ...must admit I am now wondering why she was back here..(not going down that road !!)

Am not searching out The Giles' (Dont like their names..!!!)

Mary..How do you know Margaret was in her teens when she first came out....??

Mary Report 3 Jan 2013 17:57

EGB: did I add wrong? so much info coming at me now and no time to carefully consider it. off to work again. hopefully I have time on Sunday to rebuild this part of my tree.

b 1864 came to us in 1881 would make her 17 yrs old. I census information is correct.

Turn me back for a minute and I've lost track!

Are we now saying the elusive auntie is Mary Giles? Who was previously a Stewart going by the 1900.

EGB - what do you mean you don't like their names! Makes a change!

Eringobragh1916 Report 3 Jan 2013 18:18

MC...In a nut shell yes...but I am not convinced that its them as the notation is definately on line 2 ...but it does have a scribble crossed out which looks like "mothers aunt" then niece written above ..plus page and line ref....anyway I managed to decifer Brids.address in Philadelphia 60 N.2 St.!!

Maybe I will try to find the Patrick and James Joseph I couldnt find yesterday..!!

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 3 Jan 2013 19:13

Using a ruler and a sharp pencil I've now convinced myself that Mary Giles is indeed the travelling aunt. (Not an arcane ritual, I printed off the manifest and aligned the dotted lines).

I wish I hadn't!

On arrival in 1908 Mary Giles is listed as a widow - she wasn't. Her husband James Buchanan Giles didn't die until 1934, having married a Julia H Zellner in 1902. There's a tree on ancestry has loads about him but all it has for Mary is Mary Whittle Stewart.

From the 1900 census Mary had been in US since 1868 and her parents were Scottish. Her daughter Mabel was born in Missouri in December 1886 and her father was Canadian. Mary had been married to "Buck" for 5 years.

Can't find any records to confirm Mary's maiden name:

Marriage to or divorce from James Buchanan Giles
Birth record for daughter Mabel
There was no 1890 census so can't find who Mary and Mabel were with.

I cant believe we have diverted so far from the original quest of trying to find Margaret Christy's first husband....!!

Have made some progress with Patrick and James Joseph (Cymric Dec1901 out of L'Pool) the Ellis Island records have the Manifest for the Breslau out of Bremin same date mixed with the Cymric (White Star line) so it was by sheer chance I found some of the Passenger Manifest in the mix...no idea how to manage getting the correct page for Pat and James...case of ploughing through the whole lot...I live in hope...

Eringobragh1916 Report 3 Jan 2013 22:33

MarieCeleste Report 3 Jan 2013 22:50

I don't think we have diverted too far, there's the hope that the aunt travelling in 1908 is a connection to the first husband .....

Eringobragh1916

Eringobragh1916 Report 4 Jan 2013 18:26

Maura....I put the one for Maggie on the thread earlier but had her out of Glasgow...(Didnt read the Manifest properly..!!) Certainly didnt see the Margaret Rodgers though ..but then I wasnt looking for her..!!

Given she was going to Philadelphia as was Brid. (1908) there may be a connection...
I wonder if Margaret was in the US prior to this date...Mary seems to think so but to me its odd that she returned home ...it was a very rare occurence to say the least...

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 4 Jan 2013 18:49

It may have been rare, but hadn't her mother died that year? Perhaps she wanted to go back to see the family?

Maura

Maura Report 4 Jan 2013 18:53

No her mother died in 1908, she left her daughter with her mother. But maybe her 1st husband had died and thats why she came home.

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 4 Jan 2013 19:16

Yes of course (too many Margarets!)

Maura

Maura Report 4 Jan 2013 19:37

Erin according to Mary, Margaret emigrated in 1881.

Mary I seen your tree on ancestry, you have Margaret Hamill born in Co. antrim the daughter of Joseph & Hester, I don't believe they are her parents as according to the 1901 census she was born in Tyrone. There a birth for a Thomas James Christy 1839 in Tyrone father Thomas on rootsireland

Mary

Mary Report 5 Jan 2013 05:07

Maura: my tree is not accurate. I trying to update as I can. I have a lot of paper records to reconcile against. I'm not certain about Eugene Christy b 1871 and James b 1862 which you listed as children of Thomas and Margaret. where did their info come from?

MC: I do think Margaret C. Barnard Barnshaw was here 1881. I think you are on the right track and I need to map out her trips and residences and compare them to the family events that I'm aware of.
