Good to see you Chris :-D

What about salesman or Labourer, warehouse?

:-S

Gavin

Gavin Report 16 Feb 2013 18:12

based on the John & Eliza research you did..... do we still think that this is actually the George Henry White who married Violetta Harriet Horne (my great grandparents as per their wedding cert)
Born as George William..... or is it looking unlikely now?

Gee

Gee Report 16 Feb 2013 19:09

To be honest........no idea at the moment

We will have to rule out things, before we can rule in

Arghhhhhhh

Gavin

Gavin Report 16 Feb 2013 19:12

would it help to meet up for a day of research?
I can pay your expeses and provide coffee and biscuits...lol
Even feed you........
I am really needing to get this sorted.
Have got the other 3 lines of tree to do yet.
And I need GEDcom training....lol

Wow, it is always hard coming to a thread part-way through the proceedings, but seven pages on........

Am I right in saying the only birth not yet sent for is this one:

Births Dec 1872
----------------------------------------------------
WHITE George Henry Sheffield 9c 372

Like Gins, I could easily bankrupt you, but afraid it is simply how it pans out in this "hobby". I have about 100 certs that are not "mine". Fortunately, I am not cash-starved and haven't spent any more on this hobby than Hubby has spent watching his football team go down.......and down........and down.

Maybe the rest of the searches will cost you next to nothing.

I hope so.

I hesitate to say send for this cert, but am currently at a loss as to what else to suggest. It is defo not the child who died age 15 months, so worth a shot?

I will now spend a while trying to absorb all the rest of it.

Hiya Gins, keep the Blades rockin'! Sadly, my 8-month old grandson supports the other lot.

Gavin, I realise you said you had "investigated" 9c/384 and 9c/372 but the staff told you there was no information on parents. Very doubtful that is the case, i.e. NOTHING. The 9c/384 child is likely the one that died 4/5/1873 aged 15 months, but nothing to indicate that with the 9c/372 one.

I would get it, as all else has failed so far. If I were you, I couldn't rest without it.

Still absorbing the rest of the post, will be back.

Margaret

You say its definately not the child who died aged 15 months..... what makes you sure of that?

UPDATE: ahhh yes, the age at death is 15 months....

Cheers

Gavin

Gavin Report 16 Feb 2013 22:27

The only one I havent ordered yet is;

George William White - Ecclesall B - Mar 1871 - 9c 322

Gavin

Gavin Report 16 Feb 2013 22:34

The reason I discounted 9c 372 is the name of his father; Thomas White....

On George Henry Whites marriage certificate he names his father as 'Henry John White' Boot maker

So I was looking at either 'Henry' or 'John' being the name his father used.

This led to George William....

Gavin

Gavin Report 16 Feb 2013 22:56

Based on the burial;

First name(s): George Henry
Last name: WHITE
Date of burial 4 May 1873
Age at death: 15 Months
Calculated year of birth: 1872
Place of burial Sheffield
Dedication: St Mary
County: Yorkshire (West Riding)
Sheffield St Mary:
Denomination: Anglican
Coverage 1830 - 1938
Number of entries: 27,118
Record source: National Burial Index
Data provider: Sheffield & District Family History Society

It would indicate that this death was that of the following George Henry;

9c 384

George Henry White born 18th January1872
Mother; Christiana White of Frogatt Lane, Sheffield.
Father: Not identified on the cert so I am assuming he is an illegitimate birth.

Given that Christiana is a 'White' with no father named on the cert, it would indicate she is a 'White' before marriage.

Madmeg Report 17 Feb 2013 00:09

Sorry Gavin, a lot to absorb.

Matilda White and children are in the workhouse in 1881, including son George.

This is likely George W White born March qtr 1871:

George White 32 Mason
Matilda White 25
Eliza White 5
George W White 1 Month
John Parkin 16

Yet another Matilda.

The marriage cert of George H to Violette Horne has a witness James White. No sign of a George H with a brother James on any census.

This is getting to be VERY INTERESTING to me. My hubby's grandfather is a James Weaver b 1863 in Preston, Lancashire. He disappears of the face of the earth after 1871 and is not seen again till he turns up in Macclesfield in 1893 called James White Weaver. Family rumour has it he changed his name from Weaver to White to escape the wrath of various military groups whom he joined illegally. Family rumour also has it that he went to Sheffield. Never found him, so no wiser Gavin. Wonder who this James White is.

Oh dear. A more detailed search has provided 8 more possibles from George Henry, to George Harry, and George William between 1869 and 1876, all of which are possible. Unless you have won the lottery recently, I can only suggest you either apply to go on Deal or No Deal, or park this family for now.

It is possible that he was the son of Thomas and Matilda, and when the family "escaped" from the workhouse, George was taken in by another family, whose father happened to be called Henry John. It is equally possible that he wasn't sure what his full name was so that his children gave different names on their marriages.

It grieves me to leave it like this, but I have no more brick walls to hit.

Best of luck

Margaret

I already tried Deal or No Deal.........looks like they didnt want me!

I had a real problem finding a death for one of my lot, born in NY USA......in the end, I found him, died in Dronfield UK.....got about 8 death certs until I pinned him down :-|

Up The Blades :-D

PS: I forgive your grandson, he is too young to know any better ;-)

Definitely does get frustrating, but we have to live in hope, lol.

Maybe leave it for a while, and start on another line?...

Chris

I think parking this one is the only option and carry on with other lines, something may pop up on other certificates to help at a later date

Gavin

Meeting up is not going to help you, we've done what we can so far. As for the Gedcom, Im no expert, I just download it to my email and then follow the instructions on my family tree maker

:-(

hate the thought of leaving it... feels really close to getting some answers.
I have some certs on their way;
Births for George Henry's sons, so I can see what they call their father on them.... rather than relying on relatives information. I am expecting delivery tomorrow / Tuesday.

In the meantime, i do have a couple of other threads open that have not been used for quite some time... Gins you have previously posted on them... could you have a look.... less complicated than this one.. I promise.

i have also downloaded the family tree builder you mentioned, learning my way around it now.

Gavin Report 17 Feb 2013 16:48

Gins

Question on family tree builder... I have imported my GEDcom... and it is showing the structure of my tree... seems to have people in the right places, however it does not show any informtion on how we are related... in fact it says 'this person is not related to Gavin White'
Any idea how I populate the relationship column of data.... I would have thought it was automatic from the import....

UPDATE: after logging out and back in it asked me to identify myself and then updated the relation information. Sorted.

Gavin Report 24 Feb 2013 22:17

Hi All

Does anyone know if there would be any local records kept in sheffield other than the national census records, which could be accessed for 'Carlisle Street, Sheffield', which would show every household, owners, tennants etc.....
I simply cannot find (despite numerous peoples assistance) any record of George Henry White prior to the 1911 census where he gives his place of birth as Carlisle Street......
Of the numerous certificates I have purchased, the only one referencing Carlisle Street, is for a George William White, born at 201 Carlisle Street on 19 Jan 1871.
I need to try and track this family somehow....., or see if any house on Carlisle street had a tennant / boarder going by the name of WHITE.

Any thoughts on a next step... places I may need to actually visit and trawl through data that may not be online??

Thank you.
