Hi all

Wedding cert received; I ordered the cert for the following entry;

Marriage: Thomas White - Dec 1837 - Sheffield vol 22 pg 417

It appears he married a Marion Hodpkinson.... not the Harriet I was looking for.

:-(

Hi Gavin

I thought you were going to order the birth certificate as above?

Gavin

Gavin Report 20 Jan 2013 19:18

Hi Gins,

I ordered it last week, not received it yet.

I had to wait for my RAF pension to go in to afford some more... I had bought some for one of my other threads (McKie)

Hopefully get it this week.

Hi Gins

I finally received the cert for;

Births Sep 1872
--------------------------------------------------
WHITE George William Sheffield 9c 421

Details from cert are as follows;

George William White, born 18th Sept 1872 at 4 Rhodes Street in Sheffield.
Fathers name is also George White, he was a Book Keeper.
Mothers name is Ellen White, formerly Hall.

Not one that fits with my history that I am aware of.

So, it's time to send for the second option that I posted.

The reasoning behind my posting those two deaths is that the reg district is correct for the area your family lived and there are no others births around that time, for the Sheffield district

Now, heres a curve ball!

Births Mar 1872
-------------------------------------------------------
White George Henry Sheffield 9c 384

Births Dec 1872
----------------------------------------------------
WHITE George Henry Sheffield 9c 372

Are you sure you want me to help you..I'll have you bankcrupt before too long!

what are your thoughts on this one?

George William White - Ecclesall B - Mar 1871 - 9c 322

Gavin

Gavin Report 29 Jan 2013 12:48

Bugger....

Chris I just noticed your post, i am guessing the 15th oct 1872 birth you mention is the one I just 'wasted' £9.25 on.... 9c 372..

Shame I cant amend the order now.....

:-(

Gee Report 29 Jan 2013 12:58

Gavin

Give the GRO a ring and ask if you can cancel the order for that birth certificate.

Hold your horses with the G W White above, see what the certs say when they come....or you'll be having your box repossessed!

I have received 3 certificates today;

Chris, is that death definately related to the birth on your last post? I have received the birth cert as one of my 3 today. Does the death show it was the same family?

Gins, the other 2 I received today are as follows;

Regarding George William 9c 457.... his mother could be Eliza instead of Elina

That was the confusion Gavin, I'm afraid, knowing which Burial belonged to which of those GH Births...

Sorry!...

Chris :)

(or should say which of the GHs related to the Burial, if you know what I mean!)

am I just really unlucky in not being able to identify an ancestor from the 1800's? or is it common?
How do all these people on tv trace back 100's of years??

Gavin Report 5 Feb 2013 19:55

from the latest information I am still stuck.
On the 1911 census, George Henry White is living at 143 Station Road, Wallsend. I know that to be the correct person.
On that census he states his place of birth as being Carlisle Street, Sheffield.

Initially I was pleased to see one of the 3 certs I received had a birth in Carlisle Street, although it was a George William White born in January 1871.

On the census, George's age is showing as 39 which would mean he was born prior to 03 April 1872 but after 03 April 1871...... so it cant be the Jan 1871 birth in Carlisle Street.

Further to that, on George Henry Whites death certificate, he is shown as aged 53 when he died (04th Oct 1925) which means the DoB would be between Oct 1872 and Oct 1873.

This would indicate his age at marriage or at death was wrong.... have I calculated that correctly?

Gee

Gee Report 5 Feb 2013 22:00

Ages on the censuses are more often than not inaccurate, usually by a year or two.

Ages on a death certificate are only as good as the information that the informant gives, they may not know the correct year/day of birth

All this has got a little convoluted and I need to look through everything again, at the moment I don’t have the time but will keep popping on

:-)
