Have been at my wits end looking for Arthur nesbit Bisset born Edinburgh 1865.
Nobody seems to know what happened to Arthur Bisset. Not with the family in 1901 or 1911.
Traced an Arthur Bissett found in the 1911 English census boarding in Salford, Lancashire. The birthplace (Edinburgh) is correct but the age isn’t quite right (43, not 46). The crossed out marriage length (19 years (should be 13)) and no of children (13, 5 still living) are also wrong for our Arthur, although he might have lied, been confused or it might just be wrong. The number still living (5) is correct. This almost agrees with wife Jane’s entry on the Scottish census (21 years married (also wrong), 11 children, 5 still living). Were there four or six other children that we don’t yet know of? But having said that, if we count their first child born out of wedlock in 1891 this would certainly make the lenght of time together around the 21 year mark..
The occupation (sample case maker) might be him, as he was a joiner / portmanteau maker in earlier censuses / marriage certificates.
There is a 74 year old Arthur Bissett death in Manchester North District in Q1 1939 which would fit our Arthur perfectly, as he was born 11/10/1864. Did he move to Lancashire and stay there, leaving the family behind in Glasgow? This Arthur Lived in Cheetham (2 Francis St) and died on 26/12/1938, age 74, in Crumpsall. Retired general labourer. It’s impossible to deduce from this whether or not this is the correct person. Nothing in this information indicates that this is “our” Arthur. However, the two places mentioned on the certificate (Cheetham & Crumpsall) are very close to Salford where the 1911 census Arthur was living, so this could be the same Arthur 27 years later.
The address of the informant on Arthur’s 1939 death certificate is given as 123 Crescent Rd, Crumpsall. Further investigation has established that this was the Manchester Workhouse.
Arthur Bisset was Discharged as a sergeant from the 3rd Battalion Royal Scots Reg’t on January 5th 1904 after 10 years service in the Militia of the County of Midlothian.
The story is that he abandoned the family, perhaps for England or Africa and that he sold leather goods. Arthur was present at son, James’ death on 16/9/1908 at 9 Cavendish Place, Gorbals, Glasgow. Arthur described as “Joiner (Foreman)”. Obviously still at home at that time. He would have been 44, then.
On wife, Jane’s Oct 1939 death certificate, it says “Married to Arthur Bisset, Trunk Maker”. Doesn’t say “widow of”, so Arthur still alive in October 1939? – he would have been 75. Son, John’s Oct 1939 death certificate, father listed as Arthur Bisset, Leather Trunk Maker. Son, Arthur’s Jan 1944 death certificate, father listed as Arthur Bisset, Cabinetmaker, deceased..These certificates suggest that he died between Oct 1939 & Jan 1944. Only death in England/Wales around that time was the 1938 Crumpsall one mentioned above, but that was before Oct 1939..Is there any other way I can confirm that this is the same Arthur Nesbit Bisset who has lived/died in England, leaving his family in Glasgow
