Morning both, thank you for the above. I also think Harriet/Henrietta was not married as I couldn't find any Appleby to Appleby marriages and the vicar was probably none the wiser as to her marital status. Older baptisms seem to run in the family, Henrietta and her four sisters were all baptised on 10 July 1853 at Shildon, Co Durham, although one of them was also baptised at Bedale. Thank you again.

I think you are probably right ArgyllGran, but I have viewed baptisms on microfilm, where the vicar has made a point of naming all the errant fathers for the illegitimate children of his parish.
By that time, the standardised PR forms should show an occupation for George, so you never know what you might find.

Whether it's the truth is another matter ;-)

Legally the father could not be named on the birth certificate, if he wasn't around, but I don't think there was a problem with the vicar recording him at the baptism.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 6 Sep 2024 09:35

I suspect Henrietta invented the father's name to hide the fact that she wasn't married .

The father would not have had to be present at the baptism.
There is no father named on Arthur's birth cert.

It would be good to view the actual image to see what it said about George ;-)

Did you note that Arthur was not a young infant?

Looking online, it seems that St. John's Church closed last year..............

'In December 2022, it was announced the church was to close due to declining congregation numbers and rising running costs, a final service was held on 5 February 2023.'

Argyll, brilliant, mystery solved. On FS for 1891 it only has Ann, no one else but then I noticed it said relationship to head of household "mother" (I find this quite a lot on FS which is quite frustrating, I wonder if maybe it's because it goes over onto the other page). So much for Arthur Marcer, yet another enumerator not listening properly. Thank you again :-)

Hello Argyll, I had thought Eleanor was his mother but I can't find any records of him after 1881.

Hello Gwyn, yes I've looked on FS but nothing is showing - another mystery but thanks for looking.

Gwyn in Kent

Gwyn in Kent Report 5 Sep 2024 18:05

The 1881 image is as you have written with no ditto marks after Arthur's surname, which does clearly read Marcer.

Have you looked for a baptism for him?

That might show his parents.

Marian

Marian Report 5 Sep 2024 16:40

Hello, could someone take a look at the original 1881 census for the following which is from family search and is at Darlington, Co Durham

Ann Appleby 68 widow, born Fleetham, Yorkshire
Eleanor Appleby 49 single born Leeses, Yorkshire
Other people on this record
Arthur Marcer 8 grandson born Darlington

Does the original actually look like Marcer? Are there any ditto marks to indicate his name could possibly be Arthur Marcer Appleby. I can't find anything on FreeBMD or the GRO, although there is an Arthur Appleby born Sept q 1872 Darlington area, no MMN.

I can't find any Appleby to Marcer marriages.

It is just Arthur I am asking about - thank you.

PS - am I right in thinking that at one time you could see the original of the 1881 census for free.
