There is no births for that year for someone of that name so if his mother was Irish then it is possible that he was born in Ireland so suggest you look at the Irish records for that year? '

Hi Gins.
I did see that one, and have pretty much ruled it out, basically because there is nothing to definitively rule it in!
This Harry is still in Menston in 1911 living with his family. I appreciate this proves nothing, but I am unsure why he would put totally different details for his father on the marriage cert if he were this Harry. I know I can't absolutely rule him out but what little I have just doesn't tie up.

I've had a reply from a gentleman on Birmingham History Forum. His message is as follows.

Cateswell was a large house on the Stratford Road, almost opposite which Cateswell Lane was later built and developed. Green Road ran to the north of the estate, and so any cottages on the north side would , probably, have an address in Green Road. The maps below show the area in c 1905, c1915 and c 1937, I think therefore that cateswell cottage(s) would have been the attached pair of cottages on green road in all three maps. They do not seem to be there now on google.

He also attached the maps but obviously I've not pasted on to here but think I can forward it to an e-mail if anyone wants it.

Maternal lot - Aston.

I think that many people would be very surprised if they realised how big Aston Parish was. Sometimes I forget and I'm still 'Wow' when it jumps back at me.

It's why I always recommend when using FreeBMD to include Aston aswell as Birmingham in their searches. Or even better - use Warwickshire.

Of course then there's KN but we've done that one already on here. :-S :-S :-S :-S

Your grandfather sounds like a lovely person. And the fact that you never knew about it just adds weight to him being the humble man you knew him to be.

Thank you so much for the invitation - can we keep it open at this point? I am coming over to meet my first grandchild, who is due to arrive 19th December!

I know my son is planning all sorts and I havent told my mom yet - going to surprise her :-D

It would be lovely to meet with you both and Jan particularly I know has helped me on one or two occasions in the past!

My family (& step family) seem largely to originate in all areas Aston - Erdington, Castle Bromwich, Aston, Ward End and so on. As you will know Aston was a huge parish!

A little snippet of meaningless info (other than for my sentiment), but my grandparents used to live in the 'back to backs' in Rocky Lane, Aston when my grandfather had a reasonable win on the football pools! He paid for most of the street to go on a soujourn to Blackpool and paid for running water to be supplied to their homes! Given that he was a humble man with a sizable family (my dad being 1 of 10), I find that a truly remarkable gesture. Such a shame I didnt hear about this before he passed away!

Thanks for this Wisechild. One more thing for me to do unless Jan gets to it first.

Some of the names are obvious like those (off the top of my head) in one area of Birmingham I worked in named after Prime Ministers Gladstone and Palmerston. And places like Chamberlain Square after good old Neville.

Jan I'm just going to post on HistoryForum to see if anyone knows how Cateswell got its name.

If you contact B´ham City Council (I think Roads & Bridges) I seem to remember that they have details of how all the roads in Birmingham got their names.
On the other hand, it may just be for council estate names & Cateswell road is private. Have a feeling that along with much of the housing in Hall Green, they were built by Dares. You could try googling Dares the builders to see if there´s any info on line.
Cateswell Road runs from Stratford Road, crosses Shaftmoor Lane & ends at Spring Road, Tyseley if that´s any help.

Just to add - I just couldn't wait. It is my birthday Weds and I have treated myself to a 3-month sub to Midlands Historical Data. Thought it might give us a head start!
I managed to find one ref to Cateswell Cottages (in the plural), and I now have surrounding streets off pat, so might help, who knows?

For shame, I have never visited the back-to-backs - thanks for that reminder Andy. I really should as one of my ancestors lived on Inge Street for a while, so I am guessing their house was similar. Not been to the jewellery quarter either!!
Well. they do say you never see what is on your doorstep.

Vanessa, when Jill & I visit the library I shall inquire about whether there are any possible ways of researching during the closure. In the meantime, if you get back before Friday, let us know if there is anything we can look up for you.
