Well spotted Anne, that had slipped under my radar - and my thanks to alviegal as well for the post.
Time now for me to get on my mobility scooter and face the cold weather as I need to do my weekly shopping brrrrrrrrrrrrr.
Thanks again to you both,
James

Hi James, If you look at the above post provided by alviegal, you will see that William Wotherspoon married Jeanie F Paul in Rockdale, Australia in 1910. Therefore, he was not married when he immigrated in 1908.

Thanks Anne,
I had already looked at those 2 two deaths for a William Wotherspoon and ruled them both out as I believe my William emigrated to Australia in 1908 with his wife who I believe was a Jean Ferguson Paul.
I think the William Wotherspoon who died 17 Apr 1951 would seem to be a more likely candidate for the William I am looking for. I have one child linked to him and that is a son James Fergus Wotherspoon.
Thanks also for pointing me to http://trove.nla.gov.au - this is yet another useful site.
Best Wishes,
James

Hi James, The best way to check this is to enter the death details provided onto SP and see if anything fits, at this stage, no purchase is necessary. By manipulating the search criteria, you can obtain definitive info.
This is the result:
There were only 2 two deaths for anyone called William Wotherspoon in Scotland between 1901 and 1902 and both deaths are registered in Old Monkland, Lanarkshire
First man was 27 yrs old ( bc 1875) and his death was registered in 1901. There is no definitive match to a mother's maiden name of Knox or Arthur. Only obtaining the cert will confirm his identity and if it was him, ( age is about 3yrs out and does not quite fit) then his death occurred AFTER the 1901 census. I am sure your man is the one who immigrated in 1908
Second man was 62yrs old and his death is registered in 1902. This will be the husband of Jane/Jeanie Arthur Knox, and the father of the man that you are seeking info on. Although he is mentioned on the Knox family memorial at Beith, Ayrshire, it does not necessarily mean that he was buried there, but it does confirm that his wife is interred there.

If you look at the death of the William who died in 1902 on Sp, his parents should be named. This one in Australia really does sound like your man.

Jello ***alviegal***
A lot of food for thought there, the Wm K Wotherspoon and John K Wotherspoon look like the two Knox Wotherspoon's I have on my tree.
I have five siblings in total, James b1872, the John above b1873, Isabella b1875, the William above b1878, and a Robert b1881.
I have traced all the details for James born 1872, Isabella born 1875, and Robert born 1881 (died 1887)
Now thanks to your excellent endeavors I can now put John b1873 to rest.
"Thank You" for your assistance, I am going to log off now, been on here too long today, it is so easy to lose track of time when you get engrossed with these genealogy issues.
Regards,
James

Thanks Reggie,
I have been led astray before by information on FamilySearch, once bitten twice shy, hence my query. I will have a look at the 1911 census to see what that throws up.
Also I did not think I was breaking the rules as I have not queried this individual before. I do try to resolve a lot by myself using SP and FMP and only ask questions on those I hit a dead end with.
Regards,
James

Don't ever give too much credence to info on familysearch......unless the records you see are extracted from Parish Registers
The 1911 Scottish census on Scotlands people should answer your query.............
