if he has served an apprenticeship it seems strange that he can't be found on the 1911 so his marriage certificate would be really useful to check his father's name and occupation

He certainly had older brothers Thomas & Charles which fit with the above 'Charles & Clara' family.

He joined in August 1900 at which time he was a Groom.

He also called his daughter 'Clara' - she was born 7th January, 1913.

The 1901 census and death notice information on this thread is indeed correct.
He married Annie Walmsley in Bolton in 1912 and died in Bolton in 1947. In the 1891 census he was a cotton piecer and on my grandmother's 1913 birth certificate, he was a journeyman clogger - not sure what this is. As far as I know, he never enlisted.
