Just can't find them coming back from India, we now know they were back by 1937 but they are prooving elusive. As is James's earlier life - zilch. Can't even place him going to India with any certainty.

Why can't ancestors have better names?

Sadly choosing the names of your ancesters is not an option!!

I would have thought he could be Scottish, but maybe he was born in India or travelled there as a child

Yes I also thought Scottish, and there are plenty of James's born c1875 with a father John on the FMP census in 1881, but can't access them or say with any certainty if any are him.

Hadn't thought about him born India though - will have a look, but thought he must have met Edith in England as she is on 1881-1901 census.

ICS was originally India civil service which became imperial civil service in 1886, so I think you're on to something K!

Well, it's a good way to spend a wet bank holiday! Can't believe we were intending to go to the races today - which have been abandoned!

Also, thinking about it, the children may have been at boarding school - it happened to a couple of my ftiend who were born abroad - left here for an education.

Civil War in Ulster

The Indian Civil Service background
JJ's elder brother James had spent from 1896 to 1901 in Oxford, John from 1901 to 1905 and William from 1907 to 1910. The family resources were able to support them one at a time in Oxford.

The Oxford record has it that 'James Johnston matriculated from Merton College on 1 February 1896. The first son of John Johnston, farmer of Tomagh, Castlecaulfield, he was born on 24 November 1874 in Donaghmore, County Tyrone, and was previously educated at the Royal Academical Institution, Belfast and Queen's College, Galway. He obtained second class honours in Classical Moderations in 1897 and passed groups A1 (Greek Philosophy and Greek or Latin History), B1 (English History and Literature, or Modern European History or Indian History with Political and Descriptive Geography) and B3 (the Elements of Political Economy) of the final Pass School in Michaelmas Term 1901. The degrees of BA and MA were conferred on him on 21 June 1906.'

Though maybe not, if the degrees were conferred in 1906, although the Indian history bit in in 1901 is interesting!
