The Uttoxeter Road Workhouse
A new Derby Union workhouse was built in 1876-8 at a site on the north side of the Uttoxeter Road. It was designed by local architects William Giles and Robert and Thomas Brookhouse who specialised in public and church buildings.

A gatehouse stood at the southern entrance to the site, with vagrants' wards to the west.
Behind the gatehouse stood the three-storey main block with a central clock tower. There was a central dining hall and kitchen block to its rear. Further north lay the chapel with the infirmary to its east. A separate school building lay at the north of the site.
The workhouse later became known as the Boundary House Institution, then after 1948 as Manor Hospital. The hospital closed in 1988 and all the buildings have now been demolished. The site has now been redeveloped for commercial use.

I imagine Mary refers to the map which is shown on FMP for all 1939 register entries

Can you post a link to one or both of those maps, please?

The 1939 Register gives the address as Uttoxeter Road, which matches the info given in the 2012 thread which you've resurrected.

Boundary House shows as halfway between the city hospital amd Chain Lane so it can’t have been the Manor Hospital or workhouse.
It shows on the 1888 and 1939 maps as being opposite Arundle Ave.
Has anyone any info please?

The workhouse was later known as Boundary House Institution and in 1948 as Manor Hospital. It closed in 1988 and all of the buildings were demolished. The area has now been redeveloped.

There is info on google about Derby workhouses, but it might have meant that he was in the infirmary part, as the NHS didn't start until 1948 and those who could not afford private health went into the infirmary part of the workhouse when ill although they lived nearby.

My grandfather died in 1925 at Boundary House, Derby. Can anybody help explaining if this was 'workhouse' related or an 'institution'? His living address was less than a mile away, but this was the info. on his death cert.
