It's just about possible that the maiden name was incorrectly recorded as married name - I have seen this a couple of times before.

Vivien, you might be interested to know that all Cornish census 1841 to 1901 are free online and that the OPC (online parish clerk) organisation began in Cornwall; there is an OPC for Saltash - http://www.cornwall-opc.org/Par_new/q_s/saltash.php - it could be useful for you to make contact :)

Thanks Joy i have been looking through bmd and am coming up with nothing. My mum has just told me that my grandads sister was in fact called Hilda. God knows i may be uncovering some family secret....nothing is coming up apart from the hilda vosper bwho died in 1904 in plymouth....it just seems really odd.
Perhaps i should try Hilda Lamerton....

Maybe but 1904 still only makes Zaida 13? Im so confused. Is there any way it can be searched knowing the mothers name?

There are no births of a Hilda with MMN Lamerton apart from 2 in 1926 & 1927, neither of which can be yours as surnames and places totally different.

Apparently this Hilda died as a child im trying to get information from my mum and she seems to think that she died when she was 8....no record found as of yet!! The only thing i can think of is to look on 1901 and 1911 census to see where Zaida is living, she sometimes went by the name Geraldine.
in her birth and marriage she is Zaida Nellie Geraldine
This seems to be quite the challenge!

unless she was just known as Hilda.....christened something else....i am brain storming but say if this child was illegitimate, would she be able to get baptised?

.... just asking because I found a child living with a family surname as daughter of the head of household in 1891 and couldn't find a birth 1882 under his surname or that of his wife.
Turns out she was registered in her natural mother's surname, but she had died, so her natural father and his wife raised her with their children.

Hi Viv - yes, illegitimate children could be baptised. The record would often be noted accordingly.

yes i have that Zaida mum was Flora Blight and have so far searched that she is one of seven children. She married a George Lamerton in sept 1887 in Stoke Damerel. I seem to be going the right way with this, hopefully.
That 1911 census is the one she was called Geraldine in a census prior to that one we always knew her as Geraldine also. I know Jessie Lamerton died in 1924 age 22.
Ive never heard of Monica, Kennet, Nora or Elliot however. This is all new information to me.
I know aunt edie looked after my grandfather a lot as geraldine or zaida had to work as she was a widow, very victorian lady from what i can gather

Zaidas mum was Flora Gown Blight died same year as Zaidas husband in 1930 from what i can determine.
Her father was called George Lamerton. His father was Henry Lamerton and Henrys father was John Lamerton. Thats as far as i have got at the moment
