Thomas did not appear on any of the census so I can only assume he died . I knew nothing about him so thank you I had thought MARY A QUILLEN had been born in 1868 and was James and Margarets first child but perhaps Thomas was

Could be but not sure as I would have expected the next of kin to be his wife or step son. His father died in 1916 not sure about his mother at the moment

This may be a complete red herring but maybe worth eliminating.
Name: Lizzie Quillan Age: 10 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1881 Relationship: Sister-in-law Gender: Female Where born: Glasgow, Lanarkshire Registration number: 644/4 Registration district: Calton Civil parish: Glasgow Chalmers County: Lanarkshire Address: 534 Gallowgate ED: 7 Household schedule number: 18 Line: 10 Roll: CSSCT1891_255 Household Members: Name Age Michael McKeown 32 Jane McKeown 20 Lizzie Quillan 10 Joseph Quillan 7 Brother-in-law
Just wondering if Jane's age has been mistranscribed.
This marriage is the correct area.
1889 MCKEOWN MICHAEL QUILLAN MARGARET CALTON (GLASGOW) GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 644/04 0165
Nope! Not your family Jane was actually Margaret daughter of Patrick Quillen and Elizabeth .

Sorry Kath - yes the census was 1891 but not the correct family - just a co-incidence that there were two sisters Margaret (according to the marriage)/ Jane (according to the 1891 census) and Lizzie Quillen.
I will leave it up for elimination purposes.

By the turn of the century, it was quite common for the father (or possibly an adult son) to emigrate first and get things sorted, like jobs, accomodation etc., then send for the rest of the family. Sometimes it was just 3m later, but it could be a couple of y later.
There are several collections of interest at: https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/list#page=1®ion=UNITED_STATES (including RI censuses 1905/15/25 with images and US 1900/40 with images (link to left of transcription), plus RI BMDs)

Kath....Dont know how far you got with the family in the US but if you think the Quillens pose a problem wait until you search "Phebes" line...!! I know she is not directly related but using the info.Marie Celeste supplied I did some digging to see what I could find....Needs a dozen pair of eyes and brains to work that line out..!!
Phebe "Ann" Harvey was in fact Phebe Shelley (nee Streeter) ....she married Owen Wm. Shelley 1897 Chester R Shelley son of the above was b 1895 !! 1900 Census RI shows him with Walter and Emma Harvey under the name Chester R.Shelley.(grandson)
Phebes mother was Emma Streeter (nee Cory) she married Walter Harvey in May 1886 having previously been married to a Charles Streeter....in 1861.
Found 2 other daughters from that marriage an Ida Rebecca who married a Wm.L Caswell (1886) and ...wait for it..... Mary Eliz. who married Fred Harvey brother of Walter....(1888)
Although Phebe is a "Streeter" on her marriage to Owen Shelley ..Charles Streeters name is not noted under Fathers Name ...only her mothers name.

Kath...I dont have any other site either but delve into family Search now and again..like you I find it difficult to work with using the new system....
I have been looking at the TERRY' family and have found some things on Scotlands People....
Are you short of info.for that side of the family..(other than Hugh's marriage )...
Was Hugh and family living in Glasgow 1871 or still in Edinburgh...?

Hugh Terry and family lived in Glasgow in 1871 Hugh died in 1879 while his wife died in 1871 , I have both death certificates bought from Scotlands people
I have struggled to find a marriage for Elizabeth Terry born 1845. The only one I found was to a John Campbell in 1869 but it was in Ayrshire so I am not sure. John Terry left Scotland and went to England. He was my g grandfather and I have been able to follow him Joseph Terry b1851 Edinburgh,I can find nothing on him. He does not appear on the 1861 census so I assume he died but not found a death Thats about it Thank you for your help and interest Kath
