Find Ancestors

hi everyone,
I have hit a very big brick wall trying to find the QUILLEN family in Scotland and I wonder if anyone could please help me.
On the 1871 census for Scotland I have found my family as follows :-
HUGH TERRY H 49 IRELAND
MARY A TERRY W 48 IRELAND
ELIZABETH TERRY D 27 EDINBURGH
ELIZABETH QUILLEN GRANDDAUGHTER 10 MONTHS LANARKSHIRE

Hugh and Mary had another daughter MARGARET TERRY B1843 Edinburgh and I believe she married a JAMES QUILLEN B1846 SCOTLAND so the granddaughter named above would be their daughter.

I did find the QUILLEN family on the 1881 census but I have lost the image could anyone find them for me please ?

I have also been trying to find a marriage between a JAMES QUILLEN and a MARGARET TERRY but cannot find this either,could someone please look for me please ?

no I did not have the 1871 census for James Quillan but I do have the 1851,61 and 71 for the Terry family.
Hugh Terry was my gg grandfather and I have followed that line closely . my interest was sparked in the Quillen family as I have just found out James Quillan b1846 and his son James b1875 emigrated to America in 1887 and as well as filling in the information I already have I am trying to find out what happened to the rest of his children and his wife margaret as they did not go with him.
I assume his wife had probably died .
His two older daughters Mary b1868 and Elizabeth b1870 could have married but his youngest daughter Margaret would have only been 9 yrs old so I wonder what happened to her.

1841 Edinbro. Census shows Hugh Terry aged 20 (laborer) and wife Mary aged 20 lodging at 102 Cowgate Edinbro.no children with them.

First child was not born until 1843.
I would imagine that they had not long arrived in Scotland.
I have never found a marriage for them so I assume that they married in Ireland before traveling to Scotland

He was an iron fitter and was headed to Valley Falls, intended to stay in US. He had two pieces of baggage.

Previous name on the list is a Lucy M Quillen, age 19 who was going to Calais, Ma - may be a coincidence with the name.

I have him on the us census of 1900 and 1910 arriving in 1887 and living Rhode Island,he died there in 1916

Kath, not seeing a death on Scotlandspeople for Margaret Quillen maiden surname Terry. Maybe Margaret and the other children followed at a later date?

rootgather, they are not on the US census living with James only their son James b1875 is there.
It is possible that he just left them in Scotland !

Kath, to be honest I'm not 100% convinced that the immigration record is your James. As you say, the census records indicate that they arrived together 1887 but that one is definitely not with a son. There are quite a few James Quillan/Quillens in US so that record may be another person. However, I'll leave it even if just for elimination.
