I see from my Church records, Thomas was 80 when he died in 1902. Alexander was 79 at death in 1905 and yet on the death cert for Alexander, they had 61??? Only for his son and his address we knew that was the Alexander we wanted.
On Thomas's cert, 80 years, old age, no medical attendance and daughter present at death.
Going back to John, he married Mary Deary in Taughboyne 1861,address Milltown and father David Spence. I do need to get Mary Spence nee Deary's death cert! For some reason Elizabeth was not burried in Raphoe or was Mary, but looks like John was!
If Thomas was the eldest, then David's father was called Thomas!!

Best bet .You say Alexander was a year younger ,and born in Donegal,so there is no Scottish census .

He had full age and that means anything over 21. It would be of great help to have an age on the certs then!
I am going to see what I find in the poor relief tomorrow! :-S

The 1901 Census for Thomas has his age as 76.Usually they are younger than stated at that age.Does it give his age on his marriage cert.
It still ends up the same .If we find a bapts for Thomas in Scotland, father David ,mother Elizabeth ,nothing proves it's your Thomas.A poor relief for him would help.

I have Thomas's marriage cert and David was his father and labourer of Milltown Raphoe. Alexander's cert also states David labourer from Milltown Raphoe.
David died 1872 Milltown Raphoe, but age is not correct at 69, labourer, as I have the record from the Church and it says 73, Milltown, there!
I have David Spence in Braehead Raphoe, Mary born 1838 and then he was in Milltown Raphoe as Jane born 1840. Also, I have a death for an Alexander Spence Braehead Raphoe, 1837. Looks like he moved there after the death of Alexander and I have nothing to say that was his father or uncle. Alexander was burried inTaughboyne age 80. I have been to that Church and there were a few Spences, i can't get that info just now, but I felt that he may have been David's uncle. However, John, who may also be David's son was married to Mary Derry in Taughboyne. I have that marriage cert and Sarah spence married Ballindrait and David was in Milltown and a labourer. I have John's death cert 1899, he was burried in Raphoe but died in Strabane workhouse, widower. I intend to find his wife Mary's death cert as it may have clues to where they lived and may have the same address as that of which was given on Elizabeth in 1883. Remember, she was widowed in 1872 and possibly left Milltown to stay with John in the district of Castlefin.
there was little info on David's cert, married, address and informant and cause. Elizabeth had debility for some years, so maybe that is why she was not on David's cert as the informant and why she move to the castlefin area.

ellieathome Report 27 May 2012 12:47

So was David's death certificate- age given ,job,Elizabeth as wife ,or was a second name given also.

ellieathome

Edit-How do you know Thomas Spence born Scotland is a brother of Alexander ? Have you got him on an official document? i ask because there are Spense in Raphoe 1715

ellieathome

ellieathome Report 27 May 2012 12:36

I use the "Hughwallis" site a lot ,instead of Familysearch.I notice Donegal as a County is not there .Was it once under another county name.

ellieathome

Edit-poor relief records can hold a wealth of info as i know by my own tree. And just because they were working does not rule a poor relief record out ,as the census is only 1 day in 10 years .

Edit -must be an Elizabeth Spence somewhere !!

I, like yourself is similar, I live approx. 12 miles from where the Spence family lived in Donegal. I was able to get all the family records in Raphoe. Having said that, it was David's son Alexander, was in the records in the Church of Ireland in Raphoe. I have found siblings for Alexander, Frances, Sarah, David and possibly John. I have records for Mary and Jane born in Raphoe, with David and Elizabeth as the parents. Frances married Clarke and was the informant on David's death. Sarah was married to Rowan and David, not married, was boarding with them in 1901 and on his death, his nephew, Alexander's son was the informant. John was the informant for his sister Mary in1884 and his mother Elizabeth in 1883.
I am sure there were more siblings. If I could find where they were baptised before they came to Raphoe, probably holds the key to where they came from. But I do know it was somewhere in Donegal as Alexander,David, Sarah and Frances states Donegal as place of birth.
I intend to look for the poor relief records. I would not have thought about looking there. Thank you for that info. :-D

I should point out that there are a lot of Ayrshire people with Irish ancesters in the same boat as yourself. My Grandfather came over from County Down ,and he was Church of Ireland .His parish church has no records before civil registration, and they never did burials LOL
I live 12 mls.from Kilmarnock and have ancesters from Loudon. As all your Scottish ancesters were born before 1855 ,and may not have been Bapts. i would look for a poor relief record in Ireland
. :-D

I don't know the names of Davids 2 scotish brothers. I'm only thinking it was David and his 2 brothers who came over because Thomas was born in Scotland. It was also said it was thought they came fro Anstruther!!

Thomas was the brother who was born in Scotland. I wil have a look at the census now. I know there was about a year between them. Thomas was probably baptised in Donegal where the other were. They were Church of Ireland. Thomas was 76 in 1901 Alexander was 75. Thomas was in Carnowen and Alexander was in Beltany both in Donegal

I was told that 3 Spence brothers came over to Donegal, maybe David was one of them! I know very little about him, other than the griffiths valuation and his death cert. I have Alexander's marriage cert 1849.
