Yes, Maureen I agree it is interesting..... You've obviously got access to marriage cert that Im referring to; does it appear strange to you? The fluencency of his signature makes me wonder why he would sign it Joseph Henry Denny then change his mind .....strange!

Sorry-LB-our posts overlapped.
Yes-it's sure looking like a Denny/Wood connection somehow. I wonder if Mary was a Wood and not married to Mr Denny?

I'a little lost here.
On the 1911 Joseph is listed as Wood and not Harwood.
You won't see the Mother's Maiden name on the birth registration for a birth in 1898. They weren't shown until late 1911/1912
EDIT: Sorry ladies I forgot to flick the page over!

No thats true they werent....
yes thats right in 1911 Joseph is listed as Wood but if you look for him on the 1901 census he is listed as Harwood. this is why I had a lot of problems trying to find him in the 1901.
Thank you everyone for the help.
I am still a little confused about the Denny surname though.

Hi, Based on some of the information here, I have found a possible marriage for William Wood it is;
Jan-Feb-Mar 1861 Barnet, Middlesex spouse: Elizabeth Saunders.
Do you think this maybe a connection?

This is the baptism of the Joseph Henry Wood b 1868 previously given on this thread; the only problem here is that William, his father, is a Copper Plate Printer not a Cab Driver
Name: Joseph Henry Wood Record Type: Baptism Estimated Birth Date: abt 1868 Baptism Date: 29 Mar 1868 Born: 7 March 1868 Father's Name: William Wood Mother's Name: Elizabeth Wood Parish or Poor Law Union: Charterhouse St Thomas Borough: Islington
Also on the same page is a baptism for James Goodlad Wood same parents born 15 Jul 1865 baptized same day.
So not so sure that this is the Joseph Henry you are looking for.....:-(

If our Denny/Wood theory is correct-Joseph's older brother Charles says in 1901 and 1911 that he was born in St Pancras.

I know what you mean Maureen but is sooooo fits! I had an ancestor who was a Housekeeper she bore two sons to the Head of the House (he was a widower) they were baptized with her married surname (she was a widow) but in later life, after the Head of the House died, they took on his name! The two boys were well looked after in his Will. Why they never married I'll never know!

1901 Barnbury Islington D34 > 36 William Denny and family.
I wonder when they became Wood.
No sign of William or Mary as Denny on 1911 census.
106 Clondsley St I think is Cloudsley Street

sorry I missed the second page of posts
so its possible that Joseph's mother Mary was born a Wood then later married a Denny.
I think I will go on that and have a look to see what I can find.
I have been trying to find Joseph Henry Wood on the census but not having much luck, but I did find in the 1891 census what looks like possibly a workhouse dont know if this is him but the entry reads
Name: Joseph Wood Age:22 Est Yr Birth: 1869 Relation to Head: Pauper Occupation: Cab Driver birth county: London
The address is in Kensington

hello everyone.
to all that have been trying to help me thank you.
I have not been able to find a birth for a Ralph Denny but what I did find was a birth for Ralph Edgar Wood and I purchased the cert on the cert it says;
Date born: 21 Dec 1894 Name: Ralph Edgar Father: William Wood Mother Mary Wood formerly Smith father's occupation: Cab Driver
Do you think that william and mary Denny in the census are actually William and Mary Wood, running from something maybe..... just seems a little odd
