I think that he was married before, but have not got a marriage cert for that. Also on other information received from posts I have done it looks like his father could be called Thomas from a birth cert I have.

If Ive checked the correct data, it looks like he was married before?

Have you checked for a previous marriage and crossed ref the fathers name?

They could only go on the info they were provided with Im affraid!

Sometimes a fathers name could be plucked out of thin air or they might have had a step father or even the grandfather could be listed as 'father'

No they didn't have to provide a birth cert, Sometimes if a child was illegitimate they made up a fathers name, for proprietary sake with the spouses family. they would say too deceased so no checking could be done.

It wasn't always the case though as the father could be legit and genuinely deceased by the time a child married. Lots of people died young as TB amongst other ailments was very prevalent.

Your cert will have Georges age on it so you can check back on census to see if you can find him , Plus his birth may have been registered

I have a marriage cert for a George Wenham in the year 1895, with his father's name as George (deceased). I would like to know if a fathers name could be given wrong or did they have to provide a birth certificate?
