Thankyou Potty and Rootgather. Yes Roothgatherer i am already truly hooked but as for helping others i doubt that very much as i am useless and would be telling them they belonged to a family they prob weren't even related to!!! Haha. Anyway thanks again. xx

My apologies too Emma. Living family members sometimes get in the way of looking for the dead ones!

Glad you have ordered that certificate. Please let us know the outcome.

Pats on backs to all the helpers on this thread - the team work is great!

You're doing well Emma and before long you will be well and truly hooked like the rest of us and on here helping others!

Thankyou very much Dea, Ivy and Ozibird. I have just bought a birth certificate for Doris Williams and am hoping it will therefore tell me her father was Herbert Williams so then i can progress further to see if it's the George Williams you have all listed. Really am so grateful for all this information. Emma. x

Yes, Emma, from the beginning of registration birth certificates have both mother with her maiden name and usually any former names from previous marriages, and father if he is named.

Thankyou very much Ivy. Am just wondering if i buy birth certificates from 1850s time do they definitely give the parents name? Just had a look and wasn't sure it did.

Emma, I suggest if you're having difficulty finding people that you may be too precise with your info when searching. I only had "Williams" and "Marylebone" when I found George above. There are so many variables that wreck a search. People certainly vary their birth dates, change the name they're using, are very specific to very general about their birthplace, etc.

Ivy

Ivy Report 1 Mar 2012 21:14

Hi Emma,

The census info stated that he was born in Exeter about 1875. If you search on the FreeBMD site for say Herbert Williams between March 1870 and December 1880 you should be able to see whether there is a matching birth registration about that date in the right area. Unless he had changed his name, the three forenames should make it easy to check.

[EDIT - Rootgatherer had already found this for you above]

You can then order a birth certificate for under £10 from the GRO:
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/ .The certificate will give his parents' names and his mother's maiden name.

With so many actors in the family, it might be worth looking at theatrical archives - Emilia Fox found lots of info in her episode of WDYTYA. There are various links here:

Hello Rootgatherer and Potty, i was just wondering if it would be ok to pick your brains a bit more? Sorry for bothering you it's just i don't know if i am being completely stupid or not. I have been on here religiously in my spare time since you helped me and seemed to progressed a lot on the Tomkies side of family (great, great grandmothers parents)) but when i look for Herbert George C Williams parents( great, great grandfathers) side i can't seem to find anything. I did get a record for a George Williams (could be Herberts father) and an Emily Williams (who could be mother) but no record of them anywhere else on any cenus? Just a bit stuck and wondered how i can progress. Thankyou for all your previous help and hope you don't think i'm rude asking again. Emma.

Thanks Renes.

You are quite correct this is what Genes reunited is about. Not sure though that those wishing to earn a living as researchers would agree. That certainly was my planned sideline when I retired but I can content myself with the fact that it has given someone else a bit of pleasure and saved them a few bob into the bargain.
