Marriage certs are always a good safe bet.
You would need to transcribe it all and then go for key certs to prove relationships.
But i would wager what we have found is fairly conclusive.
As you say there are still plenty of 'ends' that still need clearing up. The danger is you can get to 'off track' before you register everything you have for now.
Just remember to come back to the same thread and not starting another one, whereby there is a danger of data being repeatedly found.
If you do choose to come back, just add the word 'Updated' to your thread title.

How interesting in 1871... seems Martha jnr's dad James was staying at his sister's, just as Martha does 10 yrs later.
1871 RG number: RG10 Piece: 1587 Folio: 78 Page: 7 Reg. District: Cambridge Sub District: St Andrew the Less Address: Russell Street, St Andrew The Less, Cambridge County: Cambridgeshire -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FLEET, George Head M 32 1839 Cambridgeshire FLEET, Martha Wife F 32 1839 Cambridgeshire PARR, Fanny Mother F 74 1797 Cambridgeshire PARR, James Boarder M 27 1844 Cambridgeshire SPARKE, Rebecca Visitor F 21 1850 Cambridgeshire Another weird thing...
In 1881 we have
SPARKE, Caroline Visitor Widow F 52 1829 Isleha Cambridgeshire
....and in 1871 we have
SPARKE, Rebecca Visitor F 21 1850 Cambridgeshire
Could the Sparke's be related somewhere too? Probably through the famale line?

That looks as if it completes the picture, thank you LiverBird & Tracey.
[Edit: completes the picture for now, I'm sure when I get my head around all of this there will be new lines to follow.]
I now need to transcribe this lot and make it all tie together. For my purposes (family interest rather than scientific study) this looks to me to be pretty conclusive. To what extent might it be advisable to confirm any of this by ordering certificates and so on?

Yeah,
You have already been given the 1871 census details with Martha jnr with her father James.
So you will need to find the 1861 & 1851 to catch James with his sister Martha snr to prove the relationship.
You've already got a headstart in knowing James & Martha's mother is Fanny.

Yes, you're right Tracey, sorry I missed the second reference:
Martha jnr could well be Grandaughter/Cousin/Niece & As Martha jnr is listed on the 1871 census as being the daughter of James Parr, i would suggest she's Martha Fleet's niece.
So to confirm the suggestion, I would need to find Marth Fleet (Parr) parents, find her brothers & sisters, and find Martha jnr's parents amongst them. Have I got that logic right?

Thanks LiverBird, great! But that knocks my theory on the head. Ho hum. So I'm still left with a mystery around the Batt / Ball family.

Thanks LiverBird, John Royal is almost certainly one of the sons.
"Can't find any marriages for Betsey Parr to Ball, Batt or Bull??"
"BATT, Betsey Sister Married F 30 1871 "
Is it significant that the status here is "married", ie not widowed?
I suppose this means going back another generation to check parents of James Parr.
Wait a minute, I don't know the maiden name of Jane, wife of Thomas. If this was Batt / Bull / Ball then would that count (almost) as sister of the head of household?

Yep, Fanny should have been listed as Mother in Law to the head of the household.
Marriages Jun 1863 FLEET George Newmarket 3b 885 PARR Martha Newmarket 3b 885
The above is the relevant marriage.
As Martha jnr is listed on the 1871 census as being the daughter of James Parr, i would suggest she's Martha Fllet's niece.
As George Fleet has land, it was probably an easy way of providing Martha with work and space?

This clears up the 1881 a bit for you.
1881 RG number: RG11 Piece: 1680 Folio: 86 Page: 27 Reg. It might be she's actually Martha's (1839) mother ??
Martha jnr could well be Grandaughter/Cousin/Niece

Thanks for the explanation, Tracey, I thought there would be one (checked??) transcription to which everyone had access, silly me!
And the "in service" explanation makes a lot of sense - now why didn't I think of that! Thanks for the record Andrew.
Apart from the Parrs being pretty common around Newmarket, what can we deduce from:
George Fleet 42 Martha Fleet 42 Fanny Parr 84 >>>>Martha Parr 15 Caroline Sparke 52
Note Fanny, mother perhaps of Martha Fleet, and note the recycling of Martha?
Or am I letting my imagination run away with me here?
