... and there's more ...

The Dorset County Chronicle of 28 July 1864 reported that George Peaty got 21 days hard labour for leaving wife and family chargeable at Cerne.

I think I'll stop looking ........

I reckon we've got the picture that he was a bounder.

MarieCeleste Report 18 Feb 2012 18:21

From the Western Gazette, Friday 6 September 1878:

"AN UNDUTIFUL HUSBAND - On Saturday, before Capt J Mount-Batten, George Peaty, formerly of Cerne, was charged with leaving his wife and child chargeable to the Cerne Union. Prisoner has several times been convicted of a similar offence, the last time at the quarter sessions as an incorrigible. He was remanded, in order that a witness be called to prove that the prisoner had contributed to his wife's support".

From the Western Gazette, Saturday 30 July 1864:

"George Peaty and William Peaty, of Cerne, summoned for being drunk at Broadmayne on 15 July. They did not appear, fined 20s each including the cost; or in default 7 days imprisonment."

He also gets a mention in the Dorset County Chronicle of 3 August 1865 for again leaving his family chargeable at Cerne Abbas.

MC

Yes that does seem to be Annie E --- say correct POB on 1881 and George was a butcher

Yes maybe -- she was certainly consistent in say married or wife off --- and not widow

As he was a butcher --- perhaps he sold poached game

Renes - perhaps George was with Sarah but refused to be on census (or hid) if he was up to no good!

Renes

Renes Report 18 Feb 2012 18:00

Wow

Thanks all --- looks like it is all done and dusted

Sarah Ann is listed on 1881 and 1891 --- and her mother did remarry -- ( her lodger )

And it looks like George Peaty was a naughty boy

not sure why he was not on census -- and as MC says Sarah Ann never lists herself as a widow

Many Many thanks al

Sorry - got visitors and did a post and run!

The burial of Sarah that I posted says "wife of George Peaty - General Labourer"

If George had pre-deceased her then wouldn't it say "widow of" ?
