Thanks Gins. Yes, HALL seems to be a rather common name in Islington. All I know for certain about William is that he was a Carman and Porter, and was married to Elizabeth (of Yarmouth). Your identification of the family in W. London in 1861 fits in well with his travelling lifestyle (evident from the birthplaces of his children in the 1851 census). I was hoping, however, that the 1861 Census might confirm his age and place of birth, but alas it doesn't. His date of birth has moved by two years and his place of birth is given only as Middlesex!
I have also found Abraham and Ann. This reference is certainly consistant with William's age in the 1861 Census, but appears to be slightly early with respect to the 1851 census. I must investigate this in greater detail.
Many thanks for your interest and help.
Kind regards Victor

Youre welcome Victor
Ive looked at possible births for William but without any other info on him and his family, its a little difficult to pin him down
There are several births that could be a match but nothing to identify him for sure
I guess you could look at the births and then follow every one of the William' through to the 1841 censuses to discount the ones with the wrong wife/children?

Thank you, Gins. That's brilliant! No wonder my simple mind couldn't find William in 1861! Now I have to seak his birth around 1801 - 1803 in Islington to find his parents!
Kind regards Victor

Thanks, Margee. Yes, the 1841 and 1851 censuses are most important for William and Elizabeth Hall, but I cannot find the 1861 census. By 1871 Elizabeth was living with her daughter Catherine in Barking, Essex, but there was no mention of William.
Kind regards Victor

I would say stay with this thread or there's likely to be duplication.
I had posted the 1851 census where it said that William was born Islington. However the 1841 census says that both William & Elizabeth were NOT born in the county of Middlesex.

Having read all your brilliant contributions I am now convinced that Elizabeth Collins GARROD and Elizabeth Collins GARWOOD are one and the same person!
The marriage of Elizabeth to William HALL (St Anne, Soho, Westminster, 4th August 1833) gives her maiden-name as 'GARROD'.
The birth certificate for her daughter Ann HALL (born 25th December 1839 at Half Moon Street) gives Elizabeth's 'former' name as GARROD and her husband's name as William HALL (Porter and Upholsterer).
It's mainly when one goes back to the earlier records for Elizabeth's birthplace (Great Yarmouth, Norfolk) that the name GARWOOD appears in profusion. The difference must be something to do with local accents and spelling, I presume!
Thank you all so much for tracing Elizabeth's parents and siblings in such detail. I had some of the detail from my own studies but lacked much of the crucial information! You have made an old man very happy!
Now to tackle Elizabeth's husband William HALL! The certificate for the marriage of the couple's daughter Ann HALL to George HAMILTON (Saint Luke Register Office, Middlesex, 21st August 1860) confirms her father William's occupation as 'Carman'. The 1851 Census also gives William's occupation as 'Carman & Porter'. Unfortunately I have no census records for William after 1851 to confirm his place and year of birth. This makes it difficult to find his parents. Do I have to open a new thread to trace William's background, or can it be treated as part of the present thread?
Kind regards Victor

Where do I start! Thank you all so much for this information! It is going to take a little digestion, so I will get back as soon as possible.
One of my problems has been my inability to find William HALL and Elizabeth Collins nee Garrod / Garwood at the 1861 census, and the apparent death of William before 1871 (when I found Elizabeth and her daughter Catherine living in Barking, Essex).
Thank you all so much for your interest and help.
Regards Victor.
