OMG brain wave!!!!
Marriages Jun 1889 (>99%) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- >>>>CHAPMAN Emma Strand 1b 964 >>>>CHAPMAN Henry Strand 1b 964
We know Wm died by 1900 and I reckon it is the one in Strand in 1886.
SO...maybe our dear Emma remarried to Henry!!! THAT would explain why Henry is with her in 1901! This works according to her age in 1911, and assuming the 1891 should be 39 not 29.
*does happy dance*
What do you think?! :-D

OK this just gets weirder!
I think now this Henry is not connected to my Chapmans. Did seem odd they had a son named Chas Hy in 1877 and then another named Hy!
But get this - Wm is also a shoemaker AND Hy snr's birthplace is exactly the same as Wm's! Could be brothers?

CHAPMAN Son Male 3 London Endell St, London, Middlesex, England
Lydia 1875 still missing from 1881 census. But her birth cert shows birthplace as Endell St same as those above and they are together in a home in 1891...then again I think Hy was there too...hang on...yep
1891 Census Strand Union Infant Establishment, Millfield House Tanners End Upper Edmonton Reg District: Edmonton Transcribed as Lydia Gooding but image is Chapman - Gooding is the family above. Lydia Chapman age 15 Charles Chapman age 13 Henry Chapman age 9

Omg Vera! That is amazing. His middle name WAS Hugh! :-D He was born 20 Jan 1880 in Margate.
When you say "with brother David.Henry, Margate Kent", do you mean as next of kin, or also enlisting?

The original has him as being a house painter with nok David Hunter, Margate Kent. Difficult to read but looks like he was rejected. There is also a draft registration for Colarado for William Hugh with brother David.Henry, Margate Kent.

Yes that's them - I have Lydia's birth cert showing she was born at Endell St too (Lying-In Hospital), as shown for all the other chn in 1881.
Just had an idea - are you able to see the actual images of the censuses? Emma's maiden name was Morley so I am wondering if this is Lydia with her grandfather in 1881, mistranscribed?

Thanks for looking. Maybe he went overseas, I may never find him!
Believe both CHAPMAN parents - Emma & Wm - were decd by 1891. The younger 3 chn were in a home in Strand in 1891 Census - the two boys with older sister Lydia (my grt grandmother).
Certainly Wm was decd by 1900 when Lydia married (I have the cert).
In 1881, the older children (Emma 1870, Caroline 1873, Chas 1877) are all listed with parents - except Lydia 1875, who is a real mystery! No one can seem to find her in 1881, probably mistranscribed with another family.
I can't trace Emma or Caroline either. The family are all a bit annoying! I have just ordered Wm & Emma's marriage cert from GRO so maybe I can get further back at least.
