My thesis based on what GB and I have found is that

Albert Pratt was the illegitimate son of Lucy Pratt.

She married William Goold (also seen as Gould)

Albert grew up as a member of William Goold's family

He married as Albert Pratt, and then reverted back to the Goold surname


did he find out just before his first marriage that he was born and registered as Pratt? Did that make him decide to revert to using that name

He then decided to revert back to the Goold name .......... probably never know why!

Albert in 1901 Census ....... has to be the Goold found by GB ....... maybe he retired early from the Police, and took a job as Beer Bottler?

Albert is on the 1911 Census as Goold

Just incidentally,

the 1911 Census says that Albert and Annie Eliza had no children.

I cannot find either Albert or Annie Eliza in 1891

Thanks again - I have slotted the whole lot into a family tree programme and it fits perfectly and all makes sense..

Sylvia - the Greenslade could be a good clue - I have two intermarried families in the Chelsea area - Lammiman and Gowing. I also have James Morse marrying Eliza Greenslade and James' mother is a Lammiman. The clue is the Cleares middle name which, for me, ties a lot of things together. Eliza's father was Henry Greenslade b 1830 and that's all I know. The question is - do I now need to do a tree for a completely unrelated family of Greenslades. I don't need to, but I probably will!!!!!
