So it doesn't look like she left her husband and children behind - she left after he had died in 1906.
If she'd changed her mind then it certainly wasn't as soon as she arrived!

No, Peter, I've not heard of the Bunting Society. I'll give it a try though.
However, although this family has the surname Bunting, we can only be sure that Robert Bunting is really a Harland as his mother, Hannah, lost her husband twelve years before Robert was born and Robert was given Hannah's married surname anyway.
We'll see if there's anything on that site, though.
Thanks.

Thanks Marie Celeste.
I've dug out the paperwork and found that Jane was born around 1860 in the Brancepeth/Willington area of County Durham. Violet is actually her aunt although Jane is about four years younger than Violet. Jane was the daughter of Thomas Harland Bunting and Dorothy Sims who married in 1859 at Durham.
I'll have a root-around myself to find who she married and if I fail I'll wake up the two relatives and see if they can recall more of the family story and who Jane married. One relative is older than me and one younger but it was interesting that both of them told me the story when I met up with them separately.
I'll be in touch; many thanks.

JoyLouise - do you know the married name of the sister Jane? When was she born? I could then start looking at US arrivals etc to see if anything turns up ...

... and here we go again.
I found a baptism entry in the Durham Records Office for Jane Elizabeth Bunting in 1862 but she died in 1864. She was the daughter of Robert and Jane.
I now have the birth certificate for Jane Elizabeth's sister, Violet (aka Violetta) Bunting who was born on 1 July 1864 at Newfield, Bishop Auckland District, Co Durham. This confirms that Violet (according to BC) is indeed the daughter of Robert and Jane too.
I'm stuck now because I don't know what happened to Violet; I can find no marriage or death recorded so perhaps she changed her name.
However, two different relatives (who do not know each other) have both told me that Violet's sister Jane went to the USA to join the Mormons so perhaps Violet went with her. Jane was believed to have already married and she left husband and children behing. Apparently, she changed her mind and began the journey back to the UK, dying in NY state from where the Mormons collected her body and took it back to Utah for burial.
Can anyone point me in the right direction so I can check with the Mormon Church whether this could be true, please, as Violet is proving to be the mystery woman.

You're right. Drat! Violet found by Mel is not the one I'm looking for and since you've given me the name 'Brunton' I've found the family and mine's not Brunton.
Yes, there is a Philadelphia near Durham; there are also two Torontos, one Quebec and a Washington all close to Durham itself. There are probably more than I know of!
I'll keep searching ... and searching ...

Thanks Mel.
The only Hannah and Robert I've found are brother and sister!
I don't think this is a goer because in 1901 Hannah is living with husband, James Doy and Robert is registered as Bunting with wife Elizabeth.
I don't think they would have registered a separate dwelling and what looks like a second family between them! (I know stranger things have happened, though.)
I can't find Violet, John, Robert or Hannah together in the 1871 or 1881 Censuses where the Violet I'm searching for is living with Robert and Jane at Shotton, Durham.
