links corrected on tree, thanks for the advice Kucinta.

Everyone; I am making good progress now. Its difficult when both your paternal grandparents had the surname WHITE even before marriage...

Now looking for information on Henry John White born in Sheffield in 1849? (cordwainer), married to ??? had a son called George Henry White born in Sheffield in 1873.

Henry's father was Thomas White born in Sheffield in 1810??, he was a boot and shoe maker, need his history and his wife Harriet's details (Henry's mother)

Thanks again everyone

Gavin

Gavin Report 30 Dec 2011 12:28

Patchem, I have PM'd you details... hope they help.

Jonesy, many thanks, useful information... certainly the right houshold (looks like they had lodgers too)

Kucinta, looks like it could be Harriot GARRET who married Thomas WHITE from your list..... the christian names fit at least.

thanks everyone

Umm certificates definitely needed...

the 1891 Isle of Man census has the following possible spanner in the works:

Name: Thomas White
Age: 49
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1842
Relation: Head
Spouse's Name: Annie White
Gender: Male
Where born: Sheffield, England
Civil parish: Conchan
Ecclesiastical parish: St Georges
Town: Douglas
County/Island: Isle of Man
Country: Isle of Man
Registration district: Isle of Man
Sub-registration district: G
ED, institution, or vessel: 12
Piece: 4688
Folio: 76
Page Number: 29
Household Members:
Name Age
Thomas White 49 b Sheffield
Annie White 52 b Isle of Man
George Herminie White 20 b Eccleshall Sheffield, son
Nelly White 22 b Eccleshall Sheffield, niece

When looking at the birth registrations for Yorkshire for 1871 (since the above lad is 10 in 1881 and 20 in 1891) and checking the handwriting of the enumerator for 1891, it looks like this lad is George Hemmings White not George Henry White:

George Harman White Jan-Feb-Mar 1871 Ecclesall Bierlow Yorkshire
George Hemmings White Jan-Feb-Mar 1871 Ecclesall Bierlow Yorkshire
George Harry White Oct-Nov-Dec 1871 Sheffield South Yorkshire
George H White Oct-Nov-Dec 1871 Hull Yorkshire
George H White Oct-Nov-Dec 1871 Bradford Yorkshire

A bit odd that G H White is now son not nephew, but perhaps Thomas and Annie had adopted him? Or did two nephews swap places in 1881?

Also need to follow up on the birth date above? (27 April 1873)

Ivy

Ivy Report 30 Dec 2011 14:37

Birth registrations in Sheffield between 1872 and 1874 are:

George Henry White Apr-May-Jun 1872
George White Jul-Aug-Sep 1872
George William White Jul-Aug-Sep 1872
George White Oct-Nov-Dec 1874
George Thomas White Oct-Nov-Dec 1874

A birth in late April 1873 should be registered within 6 weeks, so before the end of June. Does the date of 27 April 1873 come from the death certificate (a year out is possible), or some other source?

Gavin

Gavin Report 30 Dec 2011 14:51

Ivy

Indeed it is confusing..... the information I have is as follows;

George Henry White
1881 Census - living in 7 Lorne Street, West Sculcoates, Hull (Aged 10)

1911 Census - lived at 134 Station Road, Wallsend, Tyne & Wear (aged 39) Census info below;
George Henry White 39 b Sheffield
Charles William White 5 b Islington London
Violetta Harriet White 36 b St Pancras London (married 17 years, 1 child)

you are correct, the information means that the birthdate must be incorrect and must be 1871, not 1873..... I wonder if the 27th April is correct (date obtained from another source, maybe a typo in the year)

Gavin

Gavin Report 30 Dec 2011 15:29

or even 1872.... which would match the name to George Henry White (apr/may/jun) especially if the date was 27th April.

Ivy

Ivy Report 30 Dec 2011 17:11

It sounds as if the birth certificate for George Henry White is definitely going to be required to avoid following the wrong line (that is, if George Henry is the correct father for Jim in 1914).

Gavin

Gavin Report 30 Dec 2011 17:41

hmmm, very confusing.
How do i obtain the birth certificates?
I work in Sheffield, is it worth going to the registrar to see if there is anything there? Or is there a way on here?

Kucinta

Kucinta Report 30 Dec 2011 17:50

Might be worth going to the Sheffield registrar because you can then get them to check for father Henry John, bootmaker/cordwainer, which you know from the marriage cert, to make sure you have the right one.

Otherwise, you can order online, cost £9.25 per cert from

https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/default.asp

Gavin

Gavin Report 30 Dec 2011 17:58

Thank you Kucinta.
Sounds like a job for the new year when work resumes, I am sure I can take time out to investigate one lunchtime.

Ivy

Ivy Report 31 Dec 2011 08:42

Sheffield register office details about obtaining certificates are on this webpage:

https://www.sheffield.gov.uk/your-city-council/register-office/getting-copy-certificates

£9 for Sheffield standard birth certificate (the short certificate does not give the parents' details).

Gavin

Gavin Report 31 Dec 2011 11:12

Thanks Ivy, I will pay them a visit next week when back at work.
Unbelievable to think that I work for the University of Sheffield (for the last 2 years) and have never known of any history linking me to Sheffield at all, yet it seems the Whites in the 1800's were all born there. I thought we were all from the North East.

Hi Gavin,
I never alter my GR tree directly.
The easiest way is to upload a tree by gedcom.
I use a free programme (PAF) that I downloaded from Family Search.
Once it is installed in your PC, ( windows only) download a gedcom from GR and open it in the programme.
Make all your changes on this only and re upload it. It will overwrite the existing tree.
