The age is a bit out on this one ...

New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957
Name: Mary Usher
Arrival Date: 13 Oct 1864
Birth Year: abt 1839
Age: 25
Gender: Female
Ethnicity/RaceĀ/Nationality: Irish
Place of Origin: Ireland
Port of Departure: Liverpool, England and Queenstown, Ireland
Destination: United States of America
Port of Arrival: New York
Port Arrival State: New York
Port Arrival Country: United States
Ship Name: Erin

There's no other info other than she normally belonged to Ireland and intended to stay in the US.

Now, is it a coincidence that this chap departed from, and arrived at, the same ports as the Mary H Usher I posted on page 1?

Atlantic Ports Passenger Lists, 1820-1873 and 1893-1959
Name: F Fosselman
Age: 30
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1834
Gender: Male
Arrival Date: 22 Nov 1864
Port of Arrival: Portland and Falmouth, Maine
Port of Departure: Liverpool, England
Ship Name: Moravian

However, this chap is a farmer from England, not a German mariner as per the marriage record.

My Mary Usher was born in Ireland around 1842. The last I found of her was the 1861 census and she was living in Liverpool.

It is has been so difficult trying to sort the "Usher" side. I was hoping this could be another lead. have not given up that it might still be the right Mary. will have to do some more research.

many thanks for your information.

There is this 1900 census:

1900 United States Federal Census about Mary Fosselman
Name: Mary Fosselman
Age: 59
Birth Date: Apr 1841
Birthplace: England
Home in 1900: Buffalo Ward 4, Erie, New York
[Erie]
Race: White
Gender: Female
Immigration Year: 1862
Relation to Head of House: Head
Marital Status: Widowed
Father's Birthplace: England
Mother's Birthplace: Ireland
Mother: number of living children: 4
Mother: How many children: 7
Occupation:
Neighbors:

Household Members:
Name Age
Mary Fosselman 59
James Fosselman 29 b Aug 1870, Massachusetts. Occ Painter
Maggie Fosselman 28 b Feb 1872, Buffalo. Waiter
Saidee Fosselman 23 b Jan 1877, Buffalo. Waiter

It says she's born in England in April 1841 and her father was English and mother Irish. The records for the children say their father was German (like the marriage record). If Mary had come to England at a young age might she have thought of it as her home country? Son James born Mass, where that 1865 marriage record was.

That census coincides with a city directory:

U.S. City Directories (Beta)
Name: Mary Fosselman
Gender: F (Female)
Residence Year: 1904
Street Address: 634 N Division
Residence Place: Buffalo, New York
Spouse: Frederick Fosselman
Publication Title: Buffalo, New York, City Directory, 1904

This actually says she's the widow of Frederick. She's living with James, a painter.

Must also be connected to:

U.S. City Directories (Beta)
Name: Frederick J Fosselman
Residence Year: 1876
Street Address: 50 Vary
Residence Place: Buffalo, New York
Occupation: Painter
Publication Title: Buffalo, New York, City Directory, 1876

I do think this looks promising and only hope I can tie it up with my Mary, Had a quick look to see if anyone else had them in their tree but no such look. Also tried on Ancestry but again nothing.

I refuse to abandon the ship, so to speak and will keep on trying and hopefully tie it up with my Mary.

Once again many thanks for all your help, I couldn't do it without you. ;-)

Ollie, I'll keep digging away and will add if I find anything else, so keep checking back.

(Happy to help anyone interested in a location near my neck of the woods!).

Definitely think that's the same family as in the 1900.

Oh good. will try searching other trees using the various spellings for the surname. Fingers crossed something will turn up.

I must admit I am woefully ignorant about your neck of the woods, but obviously will know do some searching for information about the places and also look for the addresses. Something to keep me busy.

The rest of the Ushers all lived in poverty in Liverpool, and my OH was the first to be born outside of Liverpool. when his father moved to the beautiful Cheshire Countryside Knutsford where we still live. OR SO HE THOUGHT. Would love to tell him he was wrong !!!!!!!!! :-P :-P

Ollie - by my neck of the woods I mean Seaton Delaval! I noticed it on your "Researching ... " line - I'm very close to there.

OllietheOwl

OllietheOwl Report 7 Mar 2012 22:02

Ooops!!! Yes my mum was born in Seaton Delaval. I still have relatives living around that area. Her surname was Wardle
and I have got back to around 1765 and they have all lived in the Northumberland/Newcastle area.
