Just to update you I have recieved the copies of both of my great grandparnets Marraige certs on the maternal side. So all you have helped me with is now confirmed.

Thank you so so much for all your help I am now onto my great great grandparents. I have Richard Graham father of Mary graham who was born in c. 1884. Also Richard Kirkham father of George who was born c.1886.

Got my Grandparents birth certs:

RIchard Kirkham (grandad)

Born 16/2/1912

Father George Kirkham, Mother Mary Graham

Vera Elizabeth Cartmell (grandma)

Father Robert Cartmell, Mother Elizabeth McCarthy

Lived in Marple, Near Stockport

I realised that after Dea thank. I thought the GRO was a seperate number but it was just the volume and page number.

By the way - Journeyman means that he had served his apprenticeship in his trade and was paid by the day (from 'jour' - french) for the work which he did!

Have you ticked to say that you have the GRO reference?

If so, you should only need to give the Quarter and the year and the reference numbers.

Someone has said that to me before Dea. I am applying for Grandma and Grandads birth certs at the mo but I am stuck on Grandmas DOB. I have ??/09/1921 should i just guess the date they wont let me proceed otherwise.

I think Ruchard is Georges father but one thing i don't understand is would George have married Mary Graham at 16??? and she was 18.

Don't think so Jax. Names I have not heard of I did find out that Grandmas father was deceased. That was Robert Cartmell. Also the company which Grandad worked for which could be interesting. It refered to my Great Grandfather George as a Tiler & Slater (Journeyman)Have you got any idea what journeyman means?

Do you know exactly where I order the birth cert from please would it be the same place?

You said the marriage cert tied in with everything we said, if it said his father was George then that 1911 could be them but to do it properly you could get the birth cert.

were there any witnesses on the marriage cert who could be siblings do you think?

Now, although most people buy BMD.certs from the GRO, one can also buy them from the appropriate local office (and m.certs from the appropriate minister if they're in his current register)

After 1898, this probably is either a rego office marr, or an RC marr.
RCs weren't authorized to keep registers in England until the 1980s, so the registrar would have to attend an RC marr and have the couple sign his register.

There's also a partly indexed collection on the FS site whose URL I gave above.
The collection's called:

but, in spite of the title, it's really Greater Manchester.
It's worth checking to see if the church is there, then backing up to search the index.
If there's no hits, you'll have to browse, but the LancsBMD ref is handy - the last bit of the ref is the entry #
