Hello All

Sorry i have been away for ages. I have been doing bits and bobs with my research but havent had a lot of time, 2 kids now and a third due in November :-)

Hope everyone is keeping well and if anyone can help me with my latest questions I would very much appreciate it.

I am looking for any info at all on my grand uncle and aunt Ann & Samule Kirkham who were 5 & 7 at the time of the 1911 census living at 7 Thomas Street, Hulme, Chorlton.

My mum always maintained they never married anyone but as i have found out my mother was misinformed about a lot much to her delight I was able to give her the correct details re her mum and dad.

Any help as always would be much appreciated.

Warmest Regards

Danny

Hi Daniel. I think we are somewhat related. Annie and Joseph McCarthy had 11 children only 3 of these children suvived, Betty your greatgrandmother, Annie my grandmother and May. My mother Eileen was a cousin to Vera, your grandmother. My mother Eileen was godmother to your mother Denise. We lost touch with this part of the family in the early 60's if you need any information please get in touch

I have been going over and over census records and I have a suspicion that some cartmells might have been changed from Cardmell or incorrectly transcribed.

I wonder if there is anyone out there who could look at the actual marriage in the parish register. I think I have seen details such as mother's name on marriage in some RC registers. Quite a while since I looked at one so could be confusing with baptisms where godfathers etc were often named.

Maybe as you know the exact date and church from the certificate the appropriate record office would do a free look-up

lancashireAnn Report 29 May 2012 22:44

that makes at least 3 baffled people

Daniel

Daniel Report 29 May 2012 20:34

Well I am glad that I am not the only one that is baffeled.

I wonder might my grandmother have lied and said her father was deceased in 1951 at the time of te marraige.

Also I was thinking what you have mentioned above, why would Robert have lied about his age?

I agree Ann, but it is VERY baffling !

I think we could probably discount any born in 1889. Why would he say he was younger than his bride on the marriage if he wasn't? More likely to have added to his age I think.

Possible death ?

England & Wales, Death Index: 1916-2006
about Robert Cartmell Name: Robert Cartmell
Birth Date: 3 Sep 1889
Date of Registration: Apr-May-Jun 1971
Age at Death: 81
Registration district: Fylde
Inferred County: Lancashire
Volume: 10c
Page: 719

There is this birth ??

Births Sep 1889
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cardwell Robert Fylde 8e 733

But if George married Elizabeth in 1877 (details above), WHY would he be registered in her maiden name??

Doesn't make sense :-(

I think it is a 'red herring' but thought I would post details though as I have to go to get grandchildren very soon and won't be able to follow up until later.

Dea x

EDIT - I think I have disproved this birth - he appears to be the son of a Robert & Mary?

Dea Report 29 May 2012 13:45

Yes - That is all I can think of too Ann - I have been looking for other possible Roberts but nothing is fitting just at the moment.

I'll keep at it!

I keep trying to make this one fit:

Marriage: 2 Aug 1877 St Cuthbert, Lytham, Lancashire, England
George Cartmell - 22 Labourer Bachelor of Cross Slack nr. Lytham
Elizabeth Cardwell - 22 Spinster of Cross Slack nr. Lytham
Groom's Father: George Cartmell, Fisherman
Bride's Father: John Cardwell, Farmer
Witness: Hugh Cartmell; Jane Cardwell
Married by Banns by: H. B. Hawkins
Register: Marriages 1896 - 1900, Page 36, Entry 72
Source: LSD Film 1470929

This marriage produced a Robert but I can't find him with them on census's ??

Births 1889:
CARTMELL Robert Poulton-le-Fylde Blackpool CARDWELL PLF/56/44

(I think he was registered in Dec. quarter?
Cartmell Robert Fylde 8e 673 )

lancashireAnn Report 29 May 2012 13:27

the only thing I can think of is that Robert was registered with a different surname. Cartmell is very much a surname of the Blackpool and Fylde areas (only 3 out of the 9 registered between 1888 & 1895 were not born in Fylde.

I suppose it is possible that he moved from Lancs to Derbyshire.
