If you look carefully at the image of the 1851 .... I enlarged it to 150% ..... it is possible to see several things

1. in-law has been added in a different handwriting to the Daur for Amelia

2. Mar has been written over a - (dash) in the Condition column
The - (dash) may have been meant as unknown, but taken as equivalent to "ditto"

3. Amelia has suddenly aged 10 years ....... but it looks as though someone else has written the 2 of the 25 ....... I wonder if in fact it originally said 15

It could well be that the clerk in the office entered infromation exactly frm the enumeration sheet .......... which had Amelia as Daughter, a dash in the Condition column, and age as 15

The supervisor might then have "read" the dash as meaning "ditto", so changed Daur to Daur-in-law, and decided that 15 was too you, so changed the age to 25, or decided that the number was not very clear, so decided to write over it

???. Peter is listed as barge builder. Peter, Mary and Amelia not born in County.

I think on the 1851 census daughter in law in darker pen and the 2 in 25 is much darker than the 5.

I agree - I always like to kill them off.

Potty Report 18 Dec 2011 14:20

Old, the census forms that we can see were compiled from the forms filled in by each household so mistakes could happen in the transcription. Possible the enumerator made a mistake when transferring the info. Maybe Amelia and Eliza were combined in some way?

I cannot find William after the 1851

Kay????

Amelia married Henry William Bradley in Newington, St Mary - in Surrey.

Wayne Tracey

Have not got the certificate, but if you are referring to amelia's father, her father is shown as Peter, Barge Builder - see Potty post.

Potty

All your posts are correct - I had quite forgotten William's marriage in 1842. Have not found a death for Eliza that would have enabled him to marry an Amelia.

Should have added William's marriage to Eliza.

Margee - I would like to find the marriage to Amelia. The "in-law" looks to be in a different hand from the original Census document - were they reviewed by someone else, or taken as written?

We're all confused... so your in the right place!!

I'm gonna go and have a look at the census info. Have you found anything, paperwork wise on Amelia?

Have you got the Henry marriage cert to see what it says about father?

Old,

That Amelia gives Chelsea as birth place?

it maybe that Peter was out and the information was given by Mary--stepmother and they didnt use the word--step/child/parent in those days,,more the -inlaw,so a possible its one of the same.

did the family remain in London or move back to Suffolk to account for the marriage of Amelia you found there.?

MargaretM Report 18 Dec 2011 12:45

On the 51 census both son William and dau-in-law Amelia are married so I would think they are married to each other.
She couldn't be Peter & Mary's daughter as she's married so would have a different surname.

I would appreciate someone looking into a very puzzling family history.

Peter Nicholls born 1778 in Sudbury, Suffolk - occupation Barge Builder, had several children by his first wife Sarah both in Sudbury and later in southwark.

Sarah died in 1825 and he married May Elizabeth Henniker in 1825 by whom he had several more children, including Amelia, the subject of the puzzle and confusion.

I have found Amelia Nicholls born 1835 who I am 99.99% certain is the daughter of Peter & Mary - her bbbaptism mentions that Peter is a Barge Builder.

On the 1851 Census, Peter & Mary are shown sharing their home with William - son from his first marriage, and Amelia aged 25 daughter (although it looks as if someone has afterwards added in-law).

I have looked for William marrying an Amelia, but cannot find a marriage. I have tried to find the 15 year old Amelia staying elsewhere on Census day - no success.

I have found Amelia Nicholls, born 1835, marrying Henery William Bradley on May 22 1860 and having at least 2 daughters.

I need to explain the 1851 Census - any help appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Arthur
