Spoke to Tower Hamlets Register Office as per advice on here and the first person was completely unhelpful so rang back again and got someone that was amazing! How can two so different people work together, unbelievable.

Anyhow after checking the records the lady told me that the large certificate I have is completely wrong and has asked me to send it to them and they will then send me the correct one. As I still had the order sheet from the GRO she said someone's head will definitely be on the chopping block lol, although I have had that cert since 2006 so they could no longer work there especially if all there work was that awful.

The only details she would give me as I have not paid anything is that mother's maiden name was definitely WHITLEY and she was born on 19 February 1919.

The lady kindly offered to look for the other daughter even though I told her I don't know when she was born or what her real name was.

Flick those details above are definitely the right person.

Will update again once I get the new certificate.

A further 'birth date'..........only as known to the informant, of course.

There is only one other birth for Boswell/Whitley on freebmd............in Flintshire

So any 'sibling' would have been born pre-1911, or have had a different surname at birth

Why wouldn't the father have given the mother's first name when he registered Lily's birth? It doesn't make any sort of sense.

To me, the only feasible explanation would be that they were not husband and wife, and he actually had a wife elsewhere

Can you give us the PRECISE wording from each column of the full cert..........and the same for the short cert............

The difference in birth dates and registrations is part of the original problem, surely.
A birth in February need not show until June.
If it was registered in March according to the small certificate then it does not show, so why not?
How can the big certificate have a different date?
Error somewhere, but where?
Where has the 'error' with the name Whitley come from?
Someone is making mistakes, who?

Something isn't right. You say the birth was registered 27th February 1919. This means it should appear in the March quarter of 1919, not the June quarter.

I just a marriage for Eugenie Roslind BOSWELL to George J S SMITH in 1937, Stepney, London.

Can anyone see the details for it as in parents??

There is a tree on Ancestry that has Eugenie Rosalind Boswell as the daughter of Frederick Richard Boswell and Mary Marsh and married to George James Satterley Smith. No sources are given but exact dates of birth and marriage are.

Yes that is the only reference to WHITLEY.

That other birth look a possible Eugenie to Ginny certainly could be right.

60 Sceptre Street is where Rosetta Smith was living when she married John Boswell.

Well thank you all for your help. The register office closed now but I will call them in the morning and hope I get someone more helpful than I did at the GRO.

The saga continues but thanks again to everyone that has helped.

Sceptre Street is hiding in 1911 census.

Thanks Potty I thought that as Mile End closed I could only do things through the GRO. I will give them a ring now.

As for the WHITLEY it doesn't appear on the certificate at all, only on the GRO reference as mother maiden name.
