Google books has a copy of the Official catalogue for the 1882 Dublin Exhibition of Irish Arts and Manufactures but surely there were ploughs in Ireland before 1882? I think this must have been some new type of plough?

I think it might not be the same robert also, All i have to go on ayr is that he states it in the census 1901/1911 that he was born Ayr. And i have looked at the google book site thank you for this information. I was told that he made the 1st irish plough but i think what you say is correct because what would they have used before 1882

Thank you for your help. James married margaret greer in 1862 antrim northern ireland so looking at the census of robert gray and anges lawson it seems this family isnt him as it shows him still in ayr in 1861, 1871, 1881 when it doesnt show his wife in the house with him but in 1901 he shows in 23 may st, belfast and 1911 146 donegal pass in 1911. but because belfast dont have any records before this i dont know when he came to ireland. he did win bronze award at dublin in 1882 for irish plough manufacturer in farming from queen victoria at the exhibition as james gray & co belfast, so it would be nice to find records of this day.
