Yes shortly after the marriage if it's the right Richard. Newspaper reports (accessed with my library card) suggest that on Saturday 27th February 1887 he attacked a woman by the name of Berry, with whom he had been living, with a kitchen knife in a pub in Chatham. He struck at her temple, cut her ear and then her neck. She was taken to hospital in a critical condition. She was the assistant in the lodging house he was staying at and he was jealous when he saw her drinking with another man. He admitted taking the knife along with him with the intention of murdering her. One assumes she survived as it was attempted murder he was tried for. Julie

I am still confused ...
how do we know it is your Jane Barber Goodhew who married Thomas Mancktelow in 1911 if you don't have the certificate ? oh I see, same street, well ... still wise to confirm !
is there a death for a Jane Mancktelow that matches your Jane Barber ? ( sorry my Ancestry subscription has expired so I am useless for that , the only one freebmd has is 1922 Chelsea aged 55 )
and how have you concluded that Richard Goodhew was the one I posted about from East Malling and that he was a bigamist ??
it is a plausible theory which is why I suggested it :-) but just a theory ?
what is the information about Richard Goodhew on the marriage certificate please, age, occupation, father, father's occupation ?

1881
George Barber 53 Harriet Barber 46 Charles Barber 26 Eliza Barber 23 Agnes Barber 20 William Barber 18 Jane Barber 16 Mary A. Barber 14 Emma Barber 12 Ann Barber 8 Fred Barber 6 George Barber 3
okay ... couldn't find them in 1871 so I wondered about blended family with different surnames but here they are in 1861 in Plaistow West Ham
George Barber 34 Harriett Barber 24 Charles Barber 7 Harry Barber 5 Eliza Barber 2 Agnes Barber 6 MO Harry Thomas 24 John Stain 42
but I can't identify Jane's birth ...
1871 in West Ham
George Barber 43 Harriet Barber 35 Charles Barber 16 Harry Barber 14 Eliza Barber 12 Agnes Barber 10 William Barber 8 >> Jenny Barber 6 born Plaistow Mary A Barber 4 Emma Barber 1
Births Dec 1863 Barber William West Ham 4a 13
Births Dec 1866 Barber Mary A W. Ham 4a 44
no Jane ( or Jenny ) in between
I wonder whether James Q1 1865 is a mistranscribed Jane ? ( the index was retyped long ago from a handwritten index ) ... that James probably died same quarter ...
or whether Jane was really an 'adopted' child

a Jane Goodhew married in 1911
Marriages Jun 1911 CROFT Mary A W.ham 4a 389 Donne Charles G W.Ham 4a 389 Goodhew Jane W.Ham 4a 389 Mancktelow Thomas West Ham 4a 389
could have been just before the census and registered after ...
but there is no death of a Richard Goodhew to suit 1886 to 1911
no Richard Goodhew in the Imperial Yeomanry in the Anglo-Boer war c1901
http://www.britishmedals.us/files/iyg.htm
there are three Richard Goodhews in 1881 born 1848-1868
Richard Goodhew mother Jane abt 1872 Harwich, Essex, England Harwich St Nicholas, Essex - too young, in 1891 is single, on vessel in Essex - birth reg 1871 Tendring
Richard Goodhew parents Adam, Emily abt 1873 East Malling, Kent, England East Malling, Kent - too young, in 1891 is in infantry in Maidstone - I don't see any birth reg
Richd. Goodhew wife Mary abt 1853 East Malling, Kent, England Lodger (Head) (Lodger) Rochester St Margaret, Kent - in 1891 and 1901 is a prisoner in Portsea - birth reg 1851 or 1854 Malling
not a large field to choose from for births starting 1840
Births Dec 1851 Goodhew Richard Henry Malling 5 390
Births Jun 1854 GOODHEW Richard Luck Malling 2a 343
Births Dec 1855 ( died 1861 ) Goodhew Richard Sevenoaks 2a 326
Births Mar 1861 GOODHEW Richard Alfred Malling 2a 384
there's no death of a Jane Goodhew 1886 to 2005 to match her birth
before going much farther I think you need the Goodhew Barber marriage certificate to verify that it is actually your Jane
I can only wonder whether the one who ended up in prison had married Jane bigamously ...
here is a death in the right vicinity though
Deaths Mar 1933 ( dob c1851 ) Goodhew Richard 82 Billericay 4a 872
