I am trying to untangle my husbands family. In the 1901 census I have Charles Foreman age 27 coachpainter b Colchester Essex married to Ada age 23 born Coventry Nr Ely ( think this is incorrect as Ely is in Cambrigeshire) and two children Lillie aged 5 and Rose aged 0 both born Islington. I have found a marriage for Charles Alexander Foreman and Ada Ellen Cross AMJ 1897 St Saviour Southwark 1D 189. I've also found births for Lily Minnie S Foreman JFM 1896 Islington and Ada Rose H Foreman JFM 1901 Islington.

In 1911 I can find Ada Foreman listed as wife aged 30 born Cambridgeshire married (11 years 6 children 4 living 2 died) with Lily M S aged 15, Ada R H aged 10 and Charles H aged 8 all born London. There is no record of her husband with her. I have a birth for Charles Henry Foreman JFM 1903 Southwark.

I searched for Charles Foreman in the 1911 census and found him listed as Head aged 38, enameller, born Colchester Essex with wife Rose (married 6 years 2 children both living) aged 37 born Hoxton, London and children Charles William aged 4 born Tottenham and Rosina Grace aged 2 born Islington

I can't find a marriage for a Charles Foreman and Rose around the 1905 period. Can anyone help with this. I think it may be that Charles and Ada seperated and he then lived with Rose and possibly never divorced. Is there any way of finding this out? If there was a divorce would the records be on file anywhere?

To get back to your original question, it's beginning to look like he might not have married either 'wife', if still married to Minnie!

Divorce was still very expensive at that time, so not usually resorted to by working class couples.

is there any chance Minnie is 'Ada'?

Just that Minnie's second name might be Selena (accord to marriage info), and Lily's middle names are Minnie Selina?

I still think the Ada Rose Eleanor baptism that at least three of us have posted is the right one, but that 'Eleanor' is a mistake, possibly for Helena as I tentatively suggested before.
