Re the census posted earlier:

1851 England Census about Robert Rogers
Where born: Norham, Northumberland, England
ED, institution, or vessel: Portman Barracks
etc

Does the image really say Norham?
I ask as Norham's on the R Tweed, a dozen km upstream from Berwick, and the other end of the county from Newcastle. (Well, technically, in 1821 they were in different counties as Norham was then in a detached portion of Co Durham.)

Or, as often happened in those times, the clerk whether the minister or his deacon or whatever, may have written up his registry notes at a later date and muddled things or not had all the facts.

well ... she could just as well have been fibbing on the baptism about William being dead !

the marriage was in June quarter 1848 so possibly as early as late March 1848

the birth was 15 September 1848

six months at the very outside ;-)

perhaps the marriage didn't last as long as the pregnancy ... a quick 'I do' and he was done and back to sea

but meanwhile her next husband and the public knew her as Sarah Lane ... heaven knows, oh what a tangled web we weave, etc etc

This is Rebecca's baptism which states her father as William (deceased) Mariner.:

Sarah Smith marrying William Lane is definitely the one whose baptism record I posted it seems

and that Sarah Smith is identical on all points to the wife of Robert Rogers ...

( from date and place of birth in the censuses that is )

I have also looked at the Sarah marriage cert to William Lane.(posted above). Witnesses on there are James Smith and Rebecca Smith but although James has not included the 'Lane' after his name as on the later one, It does look like the same signature to me ??

I can't see though why Sarah would need to call herself a Spinster and why her father would add her married name after his own ???

ah, I went looking for a death for Dennis Lane and didn't bother with the William Lane marriage just because I thought the name would be too common

but yes that is possible ... although in that case she would not have needed to fudge her father's name ...

the actual certificate ( Rogers and Lane ) might be a better thing to have than the transcript of the record ... it could be that some scribe or automated system added 'Lane' to her father's name maybe ? but it does say 'spinster' Dea said ... I would get it and the birth certificate to be completely sure

I found a marriage in 1848 June Quarter on Free BMD Sarah Smith to maybe William Lane. Then there's a death William Lane December Quarter 1848 in Greenwich. Maybe ??????

ah, did I miss that ? so I think she was using the surname Lane as that was the name of the man she had a child with and had to fudge to make her father fit the story

but she might have been married and committing bigamy ! ... and had to fudge to make her father fit the story :-)
