Thru Lines is now showing 3 genetic matches to two sisters of William Whitson the father of the William Whitson who was suspected as being the father of my Ggrandfather. Looks certain now this Whitson is correct. |

Amazing how accurate the information was from people trying to help but I am sure you all appreciate that you need to satisfy yourself of a reasonable degree of certainty before you can happily add a name to your tree, many thanks again to all who corresponded. |

I have at long last satisfied myself that I have found the father of the first of Agnes Stewart's children (John Muir) and very possibly also the father of the other two as well. My thanks to all who showed an interest and helped. This will off course never be a 100% certainty unless a Whitson out there would do a DNA test. |

Alan, there wouldn't be a birth certificate for John. All you can hope for is a record of his christening. Statutory registration didn't begin in Scotland until 1855. |

I am now (at long last) coming to the conclusion that the Whitson name could be correct, also that Agnes was with the Reid family in 1841 as her youngest sister Alice was given the middle name Reid which is not a name in the family line and must have been given for a good reason. I will have to one day try to have a look at the original of John Muir Stewarts birth certificate and see if the name Whitton/Whitson could have been misread. Agnes would have been very literate as her father was the schoolmaster so it could have been someone misreading it. |

There's someone on Genes who has a William Whitton born in Murroes, Angus in their tree. He has no birth year noted (1824) .. but may well be the same William. |

Or other possibility is that James served a form of apprenticeship in an Edinburgh school. |

James Stewart the schoolmaster at Drem, East Lothian father of Agnes was brought up in Leadhills and I presume became a pupil teacher in the local school, he must have shown promise as the Duke of Buccleuch who owned the mines then must have paid to complete his education in Edinburgh before moving him to the Dukes Drem school (for his estates there) via a short stay in Dirleton just down the road from Drem, |

The children of John Muir Stewart/Whitton were born in Banefield Terrace and when that was demolished Murdoch Terrace both in St Cuthberts (Fountainbridge near library), dont know if there was anything to encourage them to live there or if it was just chance. |

Thought it was worth a try as it would give a link to Edinburgh. |

Did James Stewart, Agnes' father, have a brother Charles? |

Last thought before lunch is that the name John should not have been top of the list when it came to choosing the name of her first child if it was she who chose it, It should have been James. Even going back another generation its James and Charles that are predominant not John, would guess the father chose it but the name John not exactly making things easier. |
