Hello Susanne, for old newspapers take a look at the link I posted above...free to join, and well worth doing so, apart from access to The Times, you also have one called 19th Century Newspapers, brilliant!.

Sorry for not getting back to you all sooner - summer hols and grandchildren - have to do my bit 3 days a week.
Thank you all for your help. Most of the Census info I have. The link to the London Gazette I've now added it to my favourites
Is there a link for Old Newspaper Birth notices. I've been trying to find one. So many people refer to it but I've never been able to find any.
Chris - yes I know his legal son for Leila died but not his illegitimate sons. I'm a direct decendant. He was my greatgrandfather. The London baptism records proved it and they also proved the stories passed down the family. I have a copy of the family bible as I mentioned in my post.
I was trying to follow the trail of where he was living and how he managed to keep 2 households going - sadly after he died ggran was kicked out of the house.
I have been looking also for him and his mother 1911 Census but can't find them
:-D

This appears to be the marriage:
Surname First name(s) District Vol Page

Where did you find the places of birth? Looks as though the children were not with them on the day of the 1861 Census. Were the parents on holiday?
This could be a child of theirs: Name Francis Arthur Werge Hamber Year of Registration 1855 Quarter of Registration Oct-Nov-Dec Registration District Wandsworth Registration County London Mother's maiden name Volume Number 1D Volume Page 391

You ask what evidence they would use to prove their age.
I have read replies from other helpers on other threads advising that back then age was not as important as it is now.
A lot of people couldn't read or write and they just guessed their ages - you only have to look at some census records to see that - ages can be out by 5 years.
One example of mine is my great grandmother - she married in 1901. He was 26, she was 29.
10 years later in the 1911 census he was 34 and she was 44!

Sorry for not replying sooner I fell asleep.
I have all the other certs & census record (except 1911)about his life
I never thought about him not being register. Just the opposite I presumed that as his father was a solicitor the family would have been regististered.
As most of his siblings travelled overseas what kind of documentation back then would they have used as evidence to prove their age.
