I know you're right about needing to get the marriage cert, but this birth caught my eye because the mother's forename was Johanna. I realise it's probably just a co-incidence...

Unfortunately it doesn't state WHERE in Tipperary the birth took place...

I'm not sure if Joseph was in the army although its quite possible as my granddad (William Haywood) and his brother (James I think) were in the South Staffs and then Coldstream Guards. Johanna was my grandmother's name (Johanna Haywood nee Tonks) so that name would fit for a family name.

Yes thank you I have those census results. I will send off for a copy of the marriage certificate today for the one in Wednesbury and see what that comes up with and let you know. Thanks for the help.

I've got the marriage certificate now.
Mary Carroll married Joseph Tonks at Pembroke Register office on 10/11/1883. She was 20 and a Domestic Servant in South Park Street Penbroke Dock and he was a privatein the Royal Welch Fusiliers and aged 22. His address was Hut Encampment, Pembroke Dock. His father was Joseph Tonks - Blacksmith which would accord with what I know of him.
Mary's father is listed as John Carroll - labourer.

Pleased to see that you found your Mary CARROLL. I too am researching in Fethard in Co. Tipperary and did a trip over there 4 yrs ago. Did see a CARROLL's PICTURE FRAMING shop in the main street opposite McCarthy's Pub.
SHEEDY's are somehow connected to CAROLL's. The Margaret CARROLL in the 1901 Census had a son James SHEEDY (Killed in 1916 - First World War) so I guess it's possible she may have been married to a SHEEDY previously. Good Luck.

Thank you Margaret for your response. I'm afraid I know little more. The name Sheedy doesn't mean anything to me but then again who knows!!!!
