Yes - Good find Madmeg.

I wonder if the first marriage ended in divorce? Does Nellie then become Nellie Hayes?

Kay,
Have had a look for a Nellie and William Hayes on the 1911 so far no luck.

Nope Vera, but William Hayes might have been married himself and couldn't afford a divorce to marry Nellie. And we've no idea where he was from, they could have moved anywhere - and changed their surname.

No record of a divorce from Thomas Kentleton.

Her name is Kia.....may I ask the name of your angel. Although Kia isn't as clever as yours, I noticed the computer. :-))

We lost our last cat in December. After 39 years of always having at least two, it is most odd.

Madmeg,
Oh, I am so sorry to hear that.....I know what it is like when you lose a cat.

Sadly we have also lost too many to mention over the years and it never gets any better. Now I am allergic they are outside cats.

Lovely name Kia. Ours is Bix. He is my husbands constant shadow, but he hasn't yet really mastered the art of the computor :-)

Vera, your 1891 Thomas ties in with mine of 1901. Though Louis and Catherine are probably Emily's kids cos they're not with Ellen/Nellie and Florence in 1881.

Now I'm looking for Ellen Davis Spender of Tiverton, having no luck there either yet.

Have also looked for emigration records for William Hayes with wife Ellen/Nellie. Found one, but Nellie only 20-something.

We didn't lose the cat - I mean we had him put to sleep. He was really my daughter's cat, left with us when she got married. He became suddenly ill a few days before she went on holiday, we tried everything to help him, and he just hung on till she got back. Very sad day.

I still imagine he's in the room.

In 1881 Ellen/Nellie gives her birthplace as Chelsea which doesn't help too much but this is her first marriage and lists her father as William Davis Spender

Name: Ellen Davis Spender
Age: 18
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1856
Spouse Name: Thomas Kentleton
Spouse Age: Full Age
Record Type: Marriage
Marriage Date: 26 Apr 1874
Parish: St James the Great, Bethnal Green
County: Middlesex
Borough: Tower Hamlets
Father Name: William Davis Spender
Spouse Father Name: John Kentleton

Sad about your cat Madmeg

I just wonder what name Nellie is under.

We have had to have 3 of our cats put to sleep...absolutely awful when you have to make that decision.. Your poor daughter and poor you as well...especially when you are looking after a cat. At least she saw him before he died. Sorry when I said lose I meant it had died. Should have just said died.

Ah but Ellen Floyd in 1891 says she is born Tiverton, Somerset (I thought Tiverton was in Devon).

I simply can't find any Davis Spenders or Spender Davises.

I'm still not happy that we've got the right Ellen/Nellie. We need Karen to come back and tell us what she knows. i.e. what certificates she has to give proof to all this. Does she know for sure that her grandmother was Nellie Floyd, maiden name Spender?

I'll send her a PM.

Yes Kay, we've had to make the dreadful decision a few times. Our last boy was a mere child, only 15, the others were much older, and it was SOOO hard. But it's part of the responsibility of being a pet-owner.

Long may Kia and Bix live to rule the home!

Meg

This is the marraige of Nellie and George Floyd. They are both listed as widowed and Nellie's father is this time William Spender Davis. I does sound like the same Ellen/Nellie. I do wonder with the use of two surnames whether she was illiigimate.

NEW INFORMATION ON FLORENCE FLOYD? /KENTLETON.

Florence was the daughter of my GGGrandmothers first marriage. The 1891 census records her as Florence Floyd not Kentleton, i have no idea if she was adopted by her stepfather George Floyd. In the 1901 census, she is recorded as a visitor of Susan Simpson.
George Floyd was remarried to Emilie Davies at this point, and i cannot find any record of her mother Nellie [Ellen?] Floyd formally Kentleton after the 1891 census.

Madmeg Report 18 Jun 2011 18:24

Hi Karen

We know all that. And if you have read through the postings you'll see that no-one else has found Nellie after 1891 either.

Divorce was rare and expensive back then (George Floyd was unusual), and I think that adoption was not introduced until the 1920s. People who remarried (or just moved in with a new partner) took their children with them and often gave them the surname of the new man. Some children never knew they had a different father. That's one of the beauties of family history research.

Did you want a copy of the divorce record?

We have searched for William Hayes, and any possible marriage to Nellie, but perhaps during the divorce proceedings with George it came to light that she had never divorced Thomas Kentleton, so couldn't legally marry William Hayes.

People here have done a lot of work behind the scenes. I think a "thank you" is in order.
