Christina,
I didn't know what a cordwainer was so I googled it. It's a shoemaker.

I have been looking up Benjamin Ansell-Anstell-Answell etc. all day but none of them had an occupation that I could find. But I could have missed something. Will re-check.

Thanks Vera,
I have sent a message to the GRO office asking them to tell me whether the copy of the marriage certificate (of George and Mary) is a true copy of the church records or one that was copied later. Apparently you get a reply within 5 days so we shall see. Bloomin naughty ancestors. ;-)

Benjamin Ansell (cordwainer) married Sophia as a widower, in 1846. So he could be the Benjamin Anstell in Gillingham on the 1841 census with his wife, Mary. This one is a shipwright (boat builder). Can anyone find a Benjamin Anstell who is a boot maker on the 1841 census?

Hi Dee,

I agree it is Jman as in Journeyman and Sophia's age 28

Could someone give me their opinion on the information given on Benjamin Ansell in the 1851 census where he is a boot and shoe maker. Beside the occupations of some of the men on the census there is something else written in brackets. Does it say (JMan) as in Journeyman? Also, Sophia
's age looks more like 28.

Dee

Dee Report 31 May 2011 16:22

I concur, they do look very similar. Let's hope the certificate the Bromley office send me is the original.

Mary

Mary Report 31 May 2011 14:35

On the marriage between Mary and John Tubbs it says her father is Benjamin a boat builder. It is written very clearly.
Plus as stated before it doesn't say he was Deceased.

if it is the same one born in Ramsgate Kent 1813 with Mary/Mary Sophia born 1819 doesn't it say he was a Boot and Shoe maker in 1851/61/and possibly died 1865??

Maryb

Edit, been comparing signatures on marriage for John William Tubb and Mary on 1911 and they do look similar, especially the way she writes the Y.

Vera

Vera Report 31 May 2011 14:14

Hi Dee,
Hopefully it is the original, because it must be about somewhere.

Hi Vera,
George and Mary were married at St. Paul's in Penge.I have spoken to someone in the records office in Bromley which covered Penge. Thanks to Christina giving me a phone number for Croydon who passed me on to Bromley district (which covered Penge) She is going to look up the record but she said that whether it would be the original church record or the same copy as I have already been given by the GRO office she could'nt say.

ChristinaS Report 31 May 2011 14:08

It was in Croydon - I don't know which church. This is Dee's thread. Her last entry is above at 11.32 I hope she hears back from Bromley with something positive.

Vera

Vera Report 31 May 2011 13:55

Very frustrating, surely the original should be somewhere. Which church was she married at, they must have the original in parish records.

Thanks for looking Vera. I agree with you that the "y" is very similar, and unusual. I don't know what to think.

We're trying to check on a possible bigamous marriage here. Unfortunately, the certificate for the second marriage (sent by the GRO) isn't a copy of the original, so we don't have Mary's original signature on that.

Vera

Vera Report 31 May 2011 13:42

It is possible they could be the same person....look how she signs her " y," with a tail. Looks like she was going to put Georges name in the signature then changed her mind ignoring the extra...look at the" M".

Of course I could be wrong.

What do you think?

Regards Vera
