Find Ancestors

Just looked at it again and realised that even though he's listed as James in the 1841 census, his birth is down as Jim Shaw Denton.......

Can't find him under that name anywhere either !!

On the birth of Isaac Denton's children it just has James Denton, sorry if I have missed something but where has the middle name of Shaw come from?-j

At this point I don't know what difference this is going to make but James Shaw Denton is the son of Henry Denton and Elizabeth Shaw. If you look at the 1841 census for Henry you will see James aged 13 living at Cowms. Up to now we have been looking at a James Denton son of Isaac Denton and Mary Blackburn.
Henry Denton married Elizabeth Shaw at Kirkheaton 15th Sep 1825
Dalton/Kirkheaton and Lepton are all adjoining. -jl

Yes, we were looking at James - son of Isaac as he's Thomas's brother and we thought he was married to a Briggs so we were trying to tie him up as being the father of A & G. He still could be but there is not trail ??

The James - son of Henry - I came up with this as I was looking at all the James Dentons born in the kirkheaton area that would be about the right age to father A & G.

I found 3 - son of Isaac - son of James - son of Henry.

It looks like the son of Isaac can be traced on through his life as can the son of James. The son of Henry appears in the 1841 census as James born 1828. His birth is on familysearch as Jim Shaw Denton 1828. I can find no trace of him in the 1851 census or beyond.

It's all got vey confusing hasn't it !!

I think if Alice's marriage cert doesn't yield any further clues when it comes this week I'm just going to have to accept that it's a mystery that will never be solved :o(

So, the postman today has brought me James & Sarah's marriage cert - not Alice's yet.

James did marry Sarah Turner not Briggs and it shows his father to be Isaac (deceased).

It also shows his signature - this James can sign - my James cant and signed with a cross on A's birth cert !!!

One of the witnesses is his brother - John, who, has also signed his name.

I think I can say then that whoever my James is, he's not from the immediate family as they can write their names at least !!

Sarah Turner has also signed.

witteness's were Thomas and Hannah Britton.

Thomas Framer, full age, of Drake St, a wheelwright, father John Farmer a wheelwright to
Sarah Dakin, full age, of Drake St, father Nathaniel Dakin a shoe maker
wittness's William and Elizabeth Farmer.

Both marriages at St Paul's Church, Nottingham on 7 April 12851.

In 1841 I have found a James Denton aged 30 together with a child of 9 years called Thomas Denton in the Kirkheaton area of Huddersfield(.I then found a marriage of a James Denton to a Martha Kaye in 1830 but unfortunately this is another James Denton.) However if this James Denton was married and it can be found, possibly Thomas was his first and only child. If James then gets married a second time it would mean that Thomas IS the brother, to George Alice etc- I have found a baptism for a James Denton son of Hannah but this would be to prove as she may be the mother of the other James Denton born c.1811- jl

I'd settled on Thomas because of the birth date and that he'd put Dalton as his birth place before I knew G & A's fathers name so had overlooked and forgotten that Thomas with James as a dad !!!

I'd just presumed the enumerator had got the relationship wrong !!

You could be onto something ???

I think I have found Thomas Denton on the 1851 although his age is entered as 18 instead of 19 as a Coal Miner. Still living in the Dalton/Kirkheaton area with an Earnshaw family. -jl

Just seen a flaw in my reasoning.....if this Thomas is the brother why would his father called the 12 y.o. Thomas.... on the 1871 census..-.jl;

The 12 year old Thomas could be a new wifes son ??

Or they just liked the name ??

I have a family in my tree with about 6 or 7 Williams believe it or not, a couple died young but they still ended up with 3 into adulthood :S
