Hoping for advice on how to continue with my search for Henry Martin Manwaring JNR (abt 1823).

I have now purchased marriage certificate for a Henry Martin Manwaring & Elizabeth Mitchell. Which shows that HM Jnr father was also Henry Martin Manwaring- who was a tailor. This fits in with what I have on HM Snr.

I also purchased death certificate for Elizabeth Manwaring - nee Mitchell (d1903) which lists her husband as HM Jnr. On this certificate it had HM Jnr recorded as a master grocer - not really sure what that is - but quick internet search shows he must have served some type of lengthy apprenticeship to earn this title.

However I have no luck with finding HM Jnr death certificate - I have purchased a couple of death certificates but they were not the correct ones. Any ideas on how I may find info on his death (taking that it was registered and he passed in the UK). Though I am beging to think I may just have to settle for what I have.

Interesting that Elizabeth is possibly dressmaker as Henry's father was a tailor.

Yes I dont know what happened to Henry - I suspect he had passed between 51-61. I dont think there are any children - haven't focused on that yet

Do = Ditto = the same as

In this case --Elizabeth is down as a servant --the same as George Long (2 above her on the census---Although he is a Servant --Coachman.
Elizabeth is Servant --Ladies Maid )

You will find "Do" used a lot in census --especially under the "head" of the familys Surname--I guess it saved time for the enumerater.

Thanks Barbara - try as I might I could not find that!!!!

I would say same lady - In the 1861 Census Elizabeth is a lodger - suspect that Henry may have passed between 1851-1861 then. Just have to find that death record.

(found it now - I noticed I had exact checked for name!!) Can I ask - in the record it has a Do (I think) in the relation to head column - do you know what that stands for?

Is anyone able to find the census for Elizabeth Mitchell in 1851 - I have looked but cant see it - see would have still been Mitchell as census in Mar and she married Nov.

Yes James was the youngest son of H M Manwaring another brother William was born 2 years before he, but died 1842. Until last week I had no idea that there may have been another brother. The marriage is JS Manwaring's second - his first marriage was to Jessie Kincaide who died in childbirth 29 July 1875 - and oddly this is also the DOD for H M Manwaring senior. I am direct line descendant from the first marriage

DEATH OF MR. J. S. MANWARING.
There lately passed from our midst one who unostentatiously helped onward the country of his adoption, the late Mr. James Samuel Manvvaring. The deceased gentleman was born in London on May 3, 1832, being the youngest son of Henry Martin Manwaring, of Kent. He came to Auckland (NZ) at the age of 25, while the Maoris were battling for their rights. Afterwards he crossed to Sydney on his way to the gold rush at Lambing Flat, but stopped at Bathurst. Coming to Brisbane in 1863, he went to Rockhampton to open a store for Stewart & Hemmant, but shortly returned to the Brisbane establishment, where he remained eight years and then went into business for himself as merchant tailor and gentlemen's outfitter, and continued in Queen-street until 1900. Mr Manwaring left a widow, 10 children, and 10 grandchildren.
