Looking for the birth of George Dixon including parents and any siblings. The information I have so far is
Approximate date of birth 1808-1810. Place: Deal UK which I think is in Kent. Do not know if this is his place of birth he said he was a "native of Deal in England".
Occupation: Millwright or labourer
Convicted of stealing lead on February 1828 sentenced to transportation. Info available at "www.oldbaileyonline.org" George Dixon 118280221-257
At time of conviction his age was put as 19 years.
Transported to Australia on the Albion on 29 May 1828.
• Title: George Dixon, one of 192 convicts transported on the Albion, 29 May 1828. • Details: Sentence details: Convicted at Middlesex Gaol Delivery for a term of 7 years on 21 February 1828. Vessel: Albion. Date of Departure: 29 May 1828. Place of Arrival: New South Wales. Source: Australian Joint Copying Project. Microfilm Roll 89, Class and Piece Number HO11/6, Page Number 406 There are more links with the above info which I will look at.
I have his marriage and death after arriving in Australia. Need to work out which George Dixon he was in the UK.

Hmm I thought I had put a reply on h ere. Wonder if I dumped it elsewhere. Thank you for your reply I will go look where I have hidden mine. When I searched Kent Parish Records I came across a list of Deal Freemen these names were in the list. Keeping for reference.
Dixon, John 27 July, 1710 Dixon, John 2 February, 1737 Dixon, Joseph 25 June, 1771 Dixon, Joseph, Jurat 5 December, 1804 Dixon, William 31 January, 1699
Edit. Nope can't find it. I said, thank you, I have done the search trees bit on GR and sent some messages to people with George Dixon in their tree. Because I can't use census info I am about to start searching parish registers. Hopefully there are some available.

I have emailed the Kent archives thingy and asked them if I could have access to the CD which contains the Deal parish records. If I can beg, borrow, steal or buy a copy that might answer my question. Providing of course Mr Dixon did come from there.
IGI have a couple of G. Dixon from the Kent area. I need to be careful because I know he was not in the UK after 1828.

Well that is going no where. Currently waiting for Cantebury Cathedral to reply to my email. Well, that's where the info is supposed to be.
In the meantime.....
Ireland bound we go. I am looking for the source of the following information, ie I need to see the records.
Ann(e) Mandeville, born May 1820 Daughter of Andrew and Johanna Mandeville nee Hay(e)s
Australian Immigration passenger lists is here
http://search.ancestry.com.au/iexec?htx=View&r=5544&dbid=1204&iid=IMAUS1787_081247-0385&fn=Anne&ln=Mandeville&st=r&ssrc=&pid=46512
And that pesky emoticon sign is supposed to be an "=" sign.
Birth place is named as Waterford Ireland. Above record names place of residence as Clonmale, if I am reading it correctly.
I am looking for birth of Anne, marriage of Andrew and Johanna and any other children of the marriage.
Thank you in anticipation of any information.
Whoops nearly forgot. Anne Mandeville was the partner of George Dixon. Well you knew there had to be a link!!!
I'm off to bed it's approaching witching hour over here.

Hi AuntySherlock, you've been missing a while!
Take a look at this link. There is a chap there who transcribes and does lookups for the Deal area.
I was going to register and ask about your George Dixon but I guess you would rather do it yourself :)

AS, just piddling on your thread here to mark it.
My cuz in Canterbury has parish records for ... I'm trying to find the thing she said. Meanwhile, you're not really looking for Canterbury parishes though, are you?
Here we are:
the BMD Index for the Canterbury city parishes For your info the parishes covered by my CD are St Andrews, St Alphage, St Mary Bredin, St Mary Bredman, Christchurch, St Dunstan, St George, Holy Cross, St Mary Magdalene, St Mildred, St Martin, St Peter, St Paul and All Saints. The index has been prepared by the Kent Family History Society and is very useful because, as you can imagine, unless you know which parish something happened in you have to plough through 16 sets of parish records.
in case that's useful to know.

Are you wanting to see just general census info?
In 1841, these are the Dixons in Deal of an age to be the parents:
Esther Dixon abt 1776 Kent, England Deal, Kent John Dixon abt 1776 Kent, England Deal, Kent
Mary Dixon abt 1776 Kent, England Deal, Kent Joseph Dixon abt 1776 Kent, England Deal, Kent
Letitia Dixon abt 1791 Deal, Kent Benjamin Dixon abt 1791 Kent, England Deal, Kent
of similar age to George:
Elizabeth Dixon abt 1806 Kent, England Deal, Kent Joseph Dixon abt 1806 Kent, England Deal, Kent
Richard Dixon abt 1811 Kent, England Deal, Kent Elizabeth Dixon abt 1811 Kent, England Deal, Kent
and then a dozen more younger Dixons.
I was going to suggest watching out for colonial spelling errors: the name could be Dickson. My young daughter-of-the-US-revolution friend in North Carolina is descended from many Marcums in the southeastern states, but they were Markhams before they crossed the water. Spelling often didn't travel well. But there's only one Dickson couple in Deal in 1841.
Oh, and duh, you have him in English records as Dixon.
Ah, but there are Dixson-s in Kent. A George baptised 1782, and a John c1806 with wife Ann in 1841. Just for info.

Hey, "Convicted at Middlesex Gaol".
1851
Name: Joshua S Dixon Age: 60 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1791 Relation: Head Spouse's Name: Melinas Elizn Dixon > Where born: Deal, Kent, England Civil parish: Stepney Registration district: Stepney County/Island: Middlesex
Joshua S Dixon 60 - master mariner Melinas Eliz'th Dixon 36 - born Bordeaux! Mary Lucy Dixon 16 - born London Joshua A Dixon 1 - born Cape of Good Hope Cath'ne Williams 65 - visitor, born Nancé Alex Ferguson 22 (wrongly attached to household, lodger)
That's obviously a second marriage.
Marriages Mar 1849 DIXON Joshua Sayer W. Derby 20 678 Williams Melina Elizabeth W Derby 20 678
1861 in Greenwich St Alphage:
Melina Dixon 45 - married, merchant captain's wife Joshua R Dixon 11 Melina Dixon 6 Mary Ann Gardner 55 Mary Ann Garland 19
This is probably his death with a bogus age, unfortunately:
Deaths Sep 1881 Dixon Joshua Sayer 71 Hackney 1b 365
Granted, he doesn't seem the most likely father of a delinquent. ;) Just following the fishies!
In any case we might do well to look in Middlesex in censuses rather than Deal.
One other in 1841: - edit - typo - 1851 -
Benjr Dixon 62 - timber merchant, born Rotherhithe, Surrey Sarah Dixon 56 - born Deal Sophie Dixon 28 Mary A Dixon 24 Adelaide Dixon 20 Ann Dahane 58 - sister, born Deal Jane Greener 24 Ann Dickson 19
Civil parish: Limehouse County/Island: Middlesex Registration district: Stepney

Hi again.
Deal and Walmer are often quoted in the same breath and are in East Kent on the coast just along from Dover. The parish church of Deal is St. Leonard's if that helps.
Here is a link to see a map of the area to help you get your bearings - you'll find them just by the No.3 :)

Hi guys - I have a KFHS CD which includes St George, Deal baptisms 1781-1822. Looking through quickly, there doesn't seem to be a George Dixon (or anything else that looks like the surname).
Got to go but will 'dump' all male baps for your perusal in the morning, if not before.

To those who have hailed my return..... thank you. It is great to be back.
To those who have dumped "stuff" on this thread...... thank you. I love it when I post my requests, go to bed, and wake up (which is always a bonus) to find a lovely lot of information to go through.
I now need to disect, peruse, ponder and cogitate over this little lot. What fun!! Haven't done this for months and months. Off to find my brain. Know I left it somewhere.

. UK, Prison Hulk Registers and Letter Books, 1802-1849
Name: Geo Dixon Age: 19 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1809 Date Received: 1 Apr 1828 Ship: Ganymede Place Moored: Chatham Date Convicted: 21 Feb 1828 Place Convicted: Central Criminal Court (Old Bailey), London
This I think is him. He was transported to Australia aboard the Albion May 1828.
Looks like I need a birth of around 1809. One which I keep going back to is this one
Benjr Dixon 62 - timber merchant, born Rotherhithe, Surrey Sarah Dixon 56 - born Deal Sophie Dixon 28 Mary A Dixon 24 Adelaide Dixon 20 Ann Dahane 58 - sister, born Deal Jane Greener 24 Ann Dickson 19
Civil parish: Limehouse County/Island: Middlesex Registration district: Stepney
simply because on his death cert George's occupation is listed as "carpenter". There is no George listed in the 1841 census but by that time he was in Australia.
If Sophie was 28 in 1841 she would have been born in 1813 and could have had an older brother. Conjecture and supposition.

James Charles Coke, brother of Ada the Actress's father-in-law, was a timber merchant from Wales in the mid-1850s. (He had wives in Wales, Chile, Australia and England, in that order but not necessarily sequentially.)
He has a park named after him in Norwood, South Australia, and a local university has a large collection of his and his son's personal papers.
His son wasn't no carpenter! I believe he founded a railway in Chile ...
I think that timber merchant referred to a more high-flying economic status than lumber dealer, say. But - not necessarily. Would it be more likely, though, that carpenter was a trade that George learned and took up in Australia?
What did people steal lead for?
I had some clients when I was in law school charged with theft over $1000 for stealing a lot of copper wire. They were students and had lifted one of those wooden spools from a construction site to use as a coffee table, as we did. Unfortunately for them, it still had the copper wire on it ...

AuntyS tells me she is questioning some other research she's seen but was hesitant to put it in the thread, but I said hey, we question trees at Ancestry all the time. ;)
So I checked it out and have pretty definitively debunked it, and I'll summarize here.
"If this thread (from trees at Ancestry) is correct and George Dixon was born in 1822 he would have been six years old when convicted of stealing and transported. His daughter Mary Ann would have been born when he was twenty (feasible). I have his death 26 Sep 1844 and burial 27 Sep 1844 in Australia. His age is shown on the burial as 35. So how does he father three more children Grace in 1850, Knowles in 1860 and Helen in 1865. As an example Grace is listed as being born in Balmain NSW father George Dixon and mother Anne Mandeville. Balmain is in Sydney a long, long way from where George lived and died in the Clarence River area."
And here's the debunking.
If the tree does say Grace 1850 (you may have mistyped), they even got that wrong: 2276/1858 birth DIXON GRACE M father GEORGE J mother ANNA M BALMAIN The three birth records all say George J and ANNA M. And here's a matching death record: 1123/1938 DIXON KNOWLES father GEORGE JAMES mother ANNA MARY CHATSWOOD
Two possible deaths for Anna M: 3094/1879 DIXON ANNA M > father R KERBY (see below) > mother GRACE WOOLLAHRA 129/1866 DIXON ANNA M father WILLIAM mother ROSANNA SYDNEY
Possibly George J: 9937/1906 death DIXON GEORGE J father JOSEPH mother MARY PADDINGTON
Oh look: Marriages Dec 1849 Dixon George James Lewisham 5409 Kirby Anna Mary Lewisham 5409
So I think maybe that settles that.
The trees on Ancestry are bunkum. The George and Anna who are the parents of those children are totally different people, who married in England.

My apologies AuntyS -- this household that you have quoted was actually in 1851, not 1841, my typo:
Benjr Dixon 62 - timber merchant, born Rotherhithe, Surrey Sarah Dixon 56 - born Deal Sophie Dixon 28 (c1823) Mary A Dixon 24 Adelaide Dixon 20 Ann Dahane 58 - sister, born Deal Jane Greener 24 Ann Dickson 19 Civil parish: Limehouse
Benj was born c1789 and Sarah c1795, too young for a son 1809, unless Sarah was a second wife maybe.
Just because we love packing threads full of stuff, I think this is the Dehane sisters:
Name: Anne Dehane Baptism/Christening Date: 19 Feb 1790 Baptism/Christening Place: Parish Church of Deal, Kent, England Father's Name: Jacob Dehane Mother's Name: Mary Indexing Project (Batch) Number: I01391-0 Collection: England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975
Name: Sarah Dehaun (married Ben Dixon) Baptism/Christening Date: 07 Dec 1792 Baptism/Christening Place: Deal, Kent, England Father's Name: Jacob Dehaun Indexing Project (Batch) Number: I01390-8 Collection: England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975
Sarah Dehane Spouse: Benjamin Dixon Marriage: 15 NOV 1819 Walmer, Kent, England Batch No.: M020007
So I think they're out, unless Benjamin was previously married.
