Thank you for suggestions about Jane Chalk. I know for certain that the Jane Chalk I am looking for is the Jane recorded in the 1881 census living in Downton with her father and brother. She was born in Downton, which was part of the Alderbury registration district, in July 1857 and baptised in Downton church. Chalk is a common surname in that area and I know there were others called Jane Chalk of a similar age. I am interested in finding about what happened to Jane, whatever that was. Her brother Frank married and her father died both in 1887. my late mother in law remembered an old lady who visited the family in Downton in the 1920s and who she thought was called Aunt Jane. |

As you can see Grace it does not look like the same family anyway, but what do I know? |

I don't understand Jax being reported either, from what I can see she was just trying to be helpful. |

Just marking this, as I know OH has James CHALK and Ann HATCHER in his tree, by way of Jane's sister Frances. |

Ok Christine if your Jane Chalk is with her father in 1881 then the 1901 census posted above is more than likely nothing to do with her . I also do not think the 1891 is her either as there is a Jane in the same area with a birth approx 1861 but no births for that year?? so your guess is as good as mine.... this is the Jane from 1901 above |

Hi Christine, it may be worthwhile checking the Search Trees box above as other members on this site seem to have Jane in their tree (check both spellings). If you find a connection, you can contact the tree owner for further details. |

Christine - I have a potential match on the 1901 England Census, in Devizes, Wiltshire, for a Jane Chalke (e on the end). |

Jane was born in Downton, Wilts in 1857, the daughter of James Chalk and Ann Hatcher. She was the sixth of their seven children. In 1881 she was living in Downton with her widowed father and unmarried brother Frank. After that date I can find no trace of her. She may have gone to London and may have visited downton as an old lasy in the 1920s. |
