"Sorry I didn't come back last week after I posted, I had to give the kids their lunch." (Yes, I've seen that.)

Hmm. I might have considered posting here *after* giving the kids their lunch ... and looking back less than a week later in any event ...

;)

But again, it's the unbreakable circle: nobody famliarizes themself with the board before posting (e.g. by simply reading a few threads) ... largely because all newbies are reading "surname boards" with old unanswered posts on them ... and the only way to get somebody's attention with helpful advice like this is *after* they have posted ... and run ...

Rita

we don't expect people to take the advice as literally as that

Most questions will be asked within the first 30 minutes ........... indeed, often within the first 30 seconds!

Surely it is not too much to ask that someone check back to their request every few minutes for 30 minutes or so?

I've seen requests posted and the poster has added "have to go out now", or "I'm just posting this before I go to bed"

and, yes, I've had an urgent question to ask them before I could even start on the search!

New posters don't see these posts.

New posters are reading their "surname boards" as the management's emails direct them to do. (And now, after they post,, and click on "Trying to find" again, they are returned to the same surname board. Caught in an endless loop with no idea that there is a way out, or where "out" is: the full TTF board.)

These advice posts do not appear on surname boards.

Not even the management's pinned "how to use" post appears on surname boards.

A few months ago, the new management adopted my suggestion of presenting instructions *in your face* when you click to start a thread on Trying to Find. Those instructions include the advice to stay around and check for replies and answer questions, etc. (Also: don't post more than once about the same person/family ... give all the info you have ... hahaha.)

If people aren't going to read what is in their face when they first post, it's pretty hopeless.

Many people, looking at a "surname board", see nothing but years-old, never-answered messages. (Until 4 or 5 years ago, there were no threads; the only way to reply was by PM.)

They think this site is essentially a bulletin board. They think that some day, a related person will see their message and send a PM. (Of course, by then they will have changed their email address and they won't get the notice anyway ...)

None of these "Please do this" "Please do that" advice posts on TTF or other boards has an iota of effect on new users.
