still not sure who you are actually researching (sorry!) - the thread seems to have gone off on a tangent -
if you don't have it, here is Herbert (possibly) in 1901

and his marriage -
Ontario, Canada Marriages, 1801-1926 Name: Herbert Swenson Age: 24 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1889 Spouse Name: Mabel Cecil Spouse's Age: 18 Marriage Date: 7 Mar 1913 Marriage Location: Lanark Marriage County: Lanark Archives of Ontario Microfilm: MS932_258
the original image is pretty poor, but it looks like he says his father was Charles Swenson

Thank you Choccy. Now isnt that interesting that Priscilla put her other childrens names.
If you have read earlier Sylvia found someone had said Priscillas boys Charles ,Herbert and Samuel were orphans in 1891 and were sent to Canada as home children in 1894

Once again Sylvia to the rescue. I no longer have Ancestry so havnt been able to look for these.
I looked for Priscilla any age living in Middlesbrough on the 1911 census
Found Priscilla Swenson 1864 looking at who is living with her I found Priscilla Swenson 1892 Lydia Swenson 1907
Im wondering if that is Priscilla Miller 1892 you found
There are 2 James Miller born 1863 living in Middlesbrough
I will ask for a 1911 census check to confirm

to round things out, I was trying to see if that John Baker and Cecikia in the 1891 were any relation of the family, but this is the only John W Baker and Cec* that I can find ....... but Beaminster is down on the borders of Dorset and Somerset!
I wonder if it is possible

I cannot find Samuel in 1901 .... he may well have been at sea of coruse
and I cannot find Priscilla in 1891 .................... and I ahve also looked on the 1891 Scotland Census!
I wonder if the reason that the boys were put in the Barnardo's home was because Priscilla left Samuel, sent Elizabeth Florence to friends/ relatives, and went off to Scotland (or somewhere) with James Miller ???????
I don't have a sub for the 1911, but it might be interesting to see where Priscilla is!

Elizabeth was named Elizabeth Florence Swenson
I wonder if this is her in 1891, minus Mum and Dad
1891 Census
Name: Florence E Swenson Age: 8 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1883 Relation: Visitor Gender: Female Where born: Middlesborough, Yorkshire, England Civil parish: Middlesborough Ecclesiastical parish: St Pauls Town: Middlesborough County/Island: Yorkshire Country: England Registration district: Middlesbrough Sub-registration district: Middlesbrough
John W Baker 32 b. Durham, Commercial Clerk Cecilia A Baker 24 b. Middlesboro Florence E Swenson 8
Address:- 72 Lr (??) Gladstone St
One of those trees on ancestry says she married in 1901:-
Dec 1901 Age: 18 Marriage to John Hilton Hill
This same tree has a second daughter for Priscilla
Priscilla Swenson 1892 in Clydesdale, Scotland
Look back at the 1901 census in the previous post ..................... Priscilla Miller, born ca 1891, Scotland

Priscilla turns up easily in 1901 .... will need a bit more searching for 1891
1901 Census
Name: Priscilla Swanson Age: 39 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1862 Relation: Housekeeper Gender: Female Where born: Bp Auckland, Durham, England Civil parish: Middlesbrough Ecclesiastical parish: St Barnabas Town: Middlesbrough County/Island: Yorkshire Country: England Registration district: Middlesbrough Sub-registration district: Middlesbrough
James Miller 39 b.ca 1862, Bristol, Gloucestershire, Widower, Brick yard Labourer Priscilla Miller 10 b.ca 1891, Scotland Eliza Miller 1 b.ca 1900, Hartlepool, Durham Priscilla Swanson 39 Elizabeth Swanson 18 b.ca 1883, Middlesboro
Address:- 16 Emmerson St
Someone has added Alternative Information to Elizabeth Swanson:- [Elizabeth Miller], father James Miller
...... but I think this is in error. On the actual image, she is listed after Priscilla, and is shown as daughter ..... but I really think that this means daughter of Priscilla NOT daughter of James

Hi Quinsgran
I found this last night, but didn't post it, because I wasn't sure what you ahd and didn't have, and so I didn't want to do too much duplication
1891 Census
Name: Samuel Swenson Age: 32 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1859 Relation: Crew Gender: Male Where born: Sunderland, Durham, England Civil parish: Vessels Town: Tyne Dock South Shields County/Island: Durham Country: England Registration district: South Shields Sub-registration district: South Shields ED, institution, or vessel: Caedmon of Whitby
Joseph Nelson Hursh 51 <<<< Master of the ship "Samanes" Mary Jane Hursh 42 . . . James Baxter 38 <<< Master of s/s Caedmon of Whitby William Emmerson 42 David Jones 38 Richard Hogg 54 John Charles Avery 23 William Keigwin 48 Ann Keigwin 49 Thomas Johnson 41 Robert Emmerson 23 William Bell 21 Antona Johnson 30 Carl Hansen 39 Hedley Blckey 16 Samuel Swenson 32 <<<<< Fireman . . .
the ship S/S "Caedmon of Whitby" seemingly had a HUGE crew .............. around 100 men!
AH ....... looked at the image, and it seems that the record page has combined the crews of several ships together!!!
so Samuel was on a ship at Tyne Dock on census night
1901 is needing some searching

One tree shows that Samuel and Prscilla had 4 children:-
Charles Thomas Swenson 1881 –
Elizabeth Florence Swenson 1883 –
Samuel Swainson 1885 –
Herbert Swenson 1888 – 1945
and then this story was attached to that tree:-
In 1891 The 3 boys were listed as living in the Middlesborough Union Workhouse as "Inmates". The oldest would have been 10 and the youngest three. From there they went to the Annie Macpherson Home. On March 29, 1894 the boys sailed to Canada aboard the SS Sarnia. They arrived in Halifax on April 9, 1894. They were British Home Children. The Canadian Department of Agriculture paid $2.00 for each child and they were sent to farms across Canada to serve as indentured labourers. They were separated and it is not known if they ever had contact with eachother again.
I don't understand this at all
Priscilla apparently died 1915, and Samuel in 1907.
out of interest, this is the 1891 Census for the boys
Name: Charles Thomas Swainson Age: 10 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1881 Relation: Inmate Gender: Male Where born: Middlesborough, Yorkshire, England Civil parish: Linthorpe Ecclesiastical parish: Linthorpe St Barnabas Town: Linthorpe County/Island: Yorkshire Country: England Registration district: Middlesbrough Sub-registration district: Middlesbrough
. . . Charles Thomas Swainson 10 Samuel Swainson 5 Herbert Swainson 4 . .
The boys are not identified as Orphan, as are several others on the same page
and the surname is Swainson on the census image.
